The embellishments of the third volume is different from the first two.

The preliminary pages of the first volume contain the dedication to Melo e Castro, prologue by the translator, preface by the author and index of the chapters and articles and, on the final page, the errata. The second volume contains the index of chapters and articles on the preliminary pages and the errata on the final page. The third volume contains a caveat on the preliminary pages, in which the translator presents a brief biography of the author, the index of the chapters and articles and, on the final page, the errata.

The first edition of the original French text was published in Paris in 1738. The present edition is the only one of this translation and is very rare, not mentioned in the main auction catalogues and bibliographical references.

The first volume includes an exposition of the principles of surgery, a treatise on physiology, and a treatise on tumours and the ways of treating them. The second volume continues to expose the matters relating to tumours and then the ways of treating wounds and ulcers. The third volume describes dislocations and fractures with their consequences and ways of treating them.

Silvestre José de Carvalho (Soure ?- ?) was a student at the University of Coimbra in the early 1760s. Inocêncio and his continuator Brito Aranha only report that he practised medicine in Coimbra and then in Guarda. Lisboa 1787

Elie Col de Vilars (La Rochefoucauld, Charente Maritime, 1673 - 1747) was a French physician who held various positions, including Doctor of the City of Paris (1713), physician at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris (1736), professor of surgery and pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris and its Rector from 1740 to 1744.

He was a predecessor of the doctors specialising in forensic medicine, because as ordinary doctor to the King, at the Chatelet he had the task of examining, together with other doctors, prisoners held in the prisons of Paris, especially those showing psychological imbalances, and drawing up reports to justify their transfer to the General Hospital.
