Schneider et Cie or Schneider-Creusot was a French metallurgical and steel company, which became one of the most important European arsenals during the second half of the 19th century.

In 1836, the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider bought iron ore mines and smelters around the French city of Le Creusot. They created and developed a company specialized in the production of artillery weapons, as well as products in the area of railways and shipbuilding.

During the 1860s and 1870s, there was significant progress in the production of iron and steel. Schneider's innovations in the field of metallurgy and steel production, together with the support of the French government, helped the company achieve one of the leading positions in Europe in the field of weapons engineering and production.

After 1918, the Schneider Group expanded its business and investment interests to Germany and Central and Eastern Europe. Among other things, in 1919 they became the main shareholder in the Škoda plant in Pilsen, having a decisive stake until 1938. The end of this expansion was brought about by the Second World War, after which the Schneider Group faced difficulties again. It undergoes a reorganization in 1949, focused on the gradual decline of arms production in favor of civilian production, at the time facilitated by France’s need for post-war reconstruction.

In the 1960s the group was affected by the decline of important industries, such as steel and shipbuilding. The Schneider-Empain holding company was created in 1969, and Baron Édouard-Jean Empain took over as executive director.

In 1981, the company disposed of all activities non related to the area of electrical engineering and automation. Since 1999, the group has been renamed Schneider Electric.
