Hardcover with protective dust jacket. 1st edition.

More than a simple travel book, this work is a book about “the journey”. Without overlooking the picturesque details offered by the indigenous societies of Brazil, which are among the most primitive in the modern world, the author attempts—in the style of an intellectual autobiography—to place it in a broader perspective: the relationship between the Old and the New World, the role of Man in nature, and the meaning of civilization and progress.

Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009) was a Belgian-born French anthropologist and philosopher, considered one of the founders of structural anthropology in the 1950s and one of the greatest intellectuals of the 20th century. After spending two years teaching philosophy at the Lycée Victor-Duruy in Mont-de-Marsan and the Lycée de Laon, the director of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Célestin Bouglé, invited him by phone to join the French university mission in Brazil as a professor of sociology at the University of São Paulo. This phone call would prove decisive in awakening Lévi-Strauss"s ethnographic vocation. His stay in Brazil, during which he traveled through the central regions of the country and made contact with local indigenous populations, sparked his vocation as an ethnographer. His ideas broke away from the notion that indigenous people are merely savages, disagreed with the division into civilized and primitive or superior and inferior, and demonstrated a near-radical environmentalist mindset. It was only with the publication of this work in 1955 that Lévi-Strauss became one of the best-known Francophone intellectuals. "My only wish is for a little more respect for the world, which began without the human being and will end without them—that is something we should always keep in mind," he declared at age 97 in 2005, when receiving the 17th Catalonia International Prize in Spain. He passed away on October 30, 2009, just a few weeks before his 101st birthday.
