Várias capas trazem a assinatura do desenhador e gravador parisiense A. Vialon.
The pieces each have their own engraved title page, with the exception of Wallace’s transcription (which has a running title) and the handwritten melody. Title pages illustrated with intaglio and lithographic engravings: a lithographed portrait of Thalberg on the title page of L’Art du chant au piano, a figurative vignette in Graziosa by the same author, and various borders and ornamentation in the Romantic style. Several covers bear the signature of the Parisian draughtsman and engraver A. Vialon. A copy missing the spine, with some pages restored. It contains notes in ink and pencil on some of the scores, which attest to the fact that the album was actually used for piano practice. A rare collection comprising seventeen printed piano scores and one handwritten piece, representing the 19th-century practice known as a salon music album. As an object, it is a unique collection, even though the individual editions that make it up can be found separately. Its significance lies in two key elements: the Lisbon editions by Sassetti & C.ª and the first edition of Chopin’s Fantaisie-Impromptu. The pieces cover the salon repertoire favoured by Lisbon’s elite in the mid-1800s. Of particular note is the inclusion of the first instalment of the posthumous edition of Chopin’s works, which contains the Fantaisie-Impromptu, Op. posth. 66 — this was the first French edition, revised by Julian Fontana with the authorisation of the composer’s family and printed by the Ancienne Maison J. Meissonnier, under the direction of É. Gérard. This is of particular interest for the history of posthumous editions, given that Fontana standardised and, in some cases, altered the notation, ornamentation, tempos and dynamics; it was in this edited form that the piece circulated and shaped its reception for decades. Among the remaining works, paraphrases and concert fantasias based on operas predominate — Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots and Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera by Émile Prudent, the Quatuor from Don Pasquale, and the aria Ange si pur from La Favorite, transcribed by W. V. Wallace — alongside lyrical and genre pieces: Thalberg’s Barcarolle, Graziosa, L’Art du chant and Thème et étude, Schulhoff’s Nocturne and Souvenir de Varsovie, Henselt’s Études and Gondole, Weber’s Invitation à la valse and J. N. Hummel’s La Bella Capricciosa. It also includes Liszt’s transcription La Charité after Rossini and the Concert Polonaise Op. 15 by Ernst Meumann, a German composer based in Lisbon, dedicated to Eugénio Masoni, a professor at the Royal Conservatoire — a detail that anchors the programme in the Lisbon musical milieu of the Regeneration movement. The collection also includes a handwritten melody entitled Bord du Ruisseau, copied by hand onto a hand-drawn stave; this is the only unprinted item in the volume. Three pieces were published by Sassetti & C.ª in Lisbon, on Rua Nova do Carmo: Schulhoff’s Nocturne Op. 11, Weber’s Invitation à la valse Op. 65 and Thalberg’s Thème et étude Op. 45, with prices quoted in réis. The firm, founded in 1848 by João Baptista Sassetti, introduced copperplate engraving to Portugal, raising the quality of domestic music publishing to a level on a par with French and German imports. João Baptista Sassetti (Lisbon, 1817 – 1889), of Italian descent, graduated from the Patriarchal Seminary of Lisbon. After founding his firm, he became a supplier to the Royal Conservatoire of Lisbon. Sassetti & Cia. was the leading music publisher and retailer in Lisbon during the second half of the 19th century; it was founded in 1848 on Rua Nova do Carmo and held the status of a privileged establishment. It published sheet music bearing its own catalogue numbers and also acted as a distributor of European publications. Ernst Meumann (?, c. 1810 – Lisbon, 1867), a German pianist, composer and piano dealer, settled in Lisbon in 1852, the year in which he made his debut at the Real Teatro de S. Carlos. He opened a piano shop on Rua do Alecrim and, under the patronage of King Fernando II, organised chamber music recitals in 1863. [Not to be confused with the educator, pedagogist and psychologist of the same name, Ernst Meumann, 1862–1915.] Conteúdo por ordem de encadernação/Contents by bindng order: Ref.: Referência: 2606SB005
