A obra organiza-se de forma cronológica entre a História Antiga e a Moderna, dividida em múltiplos volumes que sintetizam a evolução das civilizações. O conteúdo foca-se na ascensão e queda de grandes impérios, analisando criticamente as suas leis, religiões, governos e costumes sob uma perspetiva moral e pedagógica iluminista.

Contém nas páginas preliminares do primeiro volume um prefácio do editor e uma introdução. Páginas finais dos volumes com índice geral, e catálogo do editor apenas nos vols. I-III e VII. Incluem notas impressas a margem.

Claude-François-Xavier Millot (Ornans, 1726 — Paris, 1785) foi um clérigo e historiador francês. Entrou muito jovem na Companhia de Jesus, passou a ensinar em diversos dos seus colégios, com destaque para o de Lyon onde ensinou retórica. Entrou em ruptura com a Companhia de Jesus por fazer o elogio dos princípios filosóficos de Montesquieu, abandonou-a e passou a ser um padre diocesano, tendo sido nomeado grande-vigário pelo arcebispo de Lyon. Obteve, em 1768, uma cadeira de história no Colégio dos Nobres, fundado em Parma pelo marquês de Felino. Depois de eleito membro da Académie Française no ano de 1777, foi nomeado preceptor de Louis Antoine Henri de Bourbon-Condé, duque de Enghien, em 1778. É autor de diversas obras de carácter histórico.

Red edges only in the first volume. Decorated with capitals and finishing fleurons featuring botanical and typographical motifs.

Copy with some damage on the bindings, notes in pencil and ink – some of which are contemporary – on the endpapers and in the margins, some damp stains, and slight tears with loss of paper at the corners of the pages in some volumes. Volume I has an ink stain on pp. 13–14 and 79–80, and some moth holes; volume VII has a handwritten ownership title on the title page.

Rare. Inocêncio makes no mention of this translation or its author.

Work organised chronologically, covering both ancient and modern history, and is divided into several volumes that summarise the evolution of civilisations. The content focuses on the rise and fall of great empires, critically analysing their laws, religions, governments and customs from an Enlightenment moral and educational perspective.

The preliminary pages of the first volume contain a preface by the editor and an introduction. The final pages of the volumes contain a general index, and a publisher’s catalogue is included only in vols. I–III and VII. They include notes printed in the margins.

Claude-François-Xavier Millot (Ornans, 1726 — Paris, 1785) was a French clergyman and historian. He joined the Society of Jesus at a very young age and went on to teach at several of its colleges, notably in Lyon, where he taught rhetoric. He fell out with the Society of Jesus for praising Montesquieu’s philosophical principles, left the order and became a diocesan priest, having been appointed Vicar General by the Archbishop of Lyon. In 1768, he was appointed to a chair of history at the College of the Nobles, founded in Parma by the Marquis of Felino. After being elected a member of the Académie Française in 1777, he was appointed tutor to Louis Antoine Henri de Bourbon-Condé, Duke of Enghien, in 1778. He is the author of several historical works.
