Edição popular inglesa do final do século XVIII da última e mais delicada obra de Laurence Sterne, publicada originalmente em 1768, pouco antes da sua morte, sob o pseudónimo de Mr. Yorick, que é o alter-ego do autor. A obra completa compõem-se apenas de dois volumes, ao contrário dos quatro mencionados na folha de rosto.

A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy apresenta-se como um relato de viagem, mas subverte as convenções do género ao privilegiar encontros humanos e estados emocionais em detrimento dos marcos turísticos tradicionais. O narrador conduz-nos numa jornada interior, pautada por reflexões sentimentais, desejos velados e observações sobre a condição humana. A narrativa, espirituosa e ambígua, oscila entre o piedoso e o erótico, revelando-se ao mesmo tempo uma meditação sobre a benevolência e um retrato subtil da natureza do desejo.

A obra ficou inacabada, composta apenas por dois volumes dos quatro planeados, mas exerceu uma influência duradoura, popularizando a 'literatura sentimental' e inspirando uma série de continuações e imitações. Através desta viagem 'do coração', Sterne estabeleceu um novo modo de escrever e de ver o mundo, onde o trivial e o efémero ganham significado, e onde o humor e a melancolia coexistem de forma sublime.

Laurence Sterne (Colonmel, 1713 – Londres, 1768) foi um clérigo anglo-irlandês, escritor e humorista, conhecido sobretudo pelos seus romances inovadores e espirituosos. Após estudar em Cambridge e ser ordenado sacerdote anglicano, exerceu funções eclesiásticas durante grande parte da vida, mas alcançou fama literária tardia com a publicação de «The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman» (1759–1767), uma obra que revolucionou a narrativa com o seu estilo fragmentado, digressivo e metaficcional. A sua escrita exerceu grande influência na literatura europeia, abrindo caminho para o romance moderno.

Ridley from an original painting by Dance, dated 1797; and between pages 112 and 113 with an unpublished drawing by Courbould and engraved by Hawkine, dated 1798, which illustrates a scene from the work. There is also a small coat of arms in the text, woodcut on page 75.

Popular late 18th century English edition of Laurence Sterne's last and most delicate work, originally published in 1768, shortly before his death, under the pseudonym Mr Yorick, the author's alter-ego. The complete work consists of only two volumes, as opposed to the four mentioned on the title page.

The first 10 pages contain an anonymous biography of Laurence Sterne. Last unnumbered pages with a catalogue of the publisher's works. The work is divided into two volumes, the first up to page 64.

A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy presents itself as a travelogue, but subverts the conventions of the genre by favouring human encounters and emotional states over traditional tourist landmarks. The narrator takes us on an inner journey, characterised by sentimental reflections, veiled desires and observations about the human condition. The narrative, witty and ambiguous, oscillates between the pious and the erotic, revealing itself to be both a meditation on benevolence and a subtle portrait of the nature of desire.

The work remained unfinished, comprising only two volumes of the four planned, but it had a lasting influence, popularising 'sentimental literature' and inspiring a series of continuations and imitations. Through this journey 'of the heart', Sterne established a new way of writing and seeing the world, where the trivial and the ephemeral gain meaning, and where humour and melancholy coexist in a sublime way.

Laurence Sterne (Colonmel, 1713 - London, 1768) was an Anglo-Irish clergyman, writer and humourist, known above all for his innovative and witty novels. After studying at Cambridge and being ordained an Anglican priest, he held ecclesiastical office for most of his life, but achieved late literary fame with the publication of "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" (1759-1767), a work that revolutionised narrative with its fragmented, digressive and metafictional style. His writing had a major influence on European literature, paving the way for the modern novel.
