La Mettrie (1709-1751), médico e filósofo francês, natural de Saint-Malo, é um dos primeiros materialistas franceses do Iluminismo. É sobretudo recordado por tomar a posição de que os humanos são animais complexos e não têm mais alma do que outros animais. Considera que a mente é parte do corpo e que a vida deve ser vivida de modo a produzir prazer (hedonismo). As suas opiniões eram tão controversas que teve de fugir de França e estabelecer-se em Berlim.

La Mettrie (1709-1751), French physician and philosopher, born in Saint-Malo, is one of the first French materialists of the Enlightenment. He is mostly remembered for taking the position that humans are complex animals and have no more soul than other animals. He considers that the mind is part of the body and that life should be lived to produce pleasure (hedonism). His views were so controversial that he had to flee France and settle in Berlin.
