LOTTER. (Tobbias) SPHAERA ARMILLARIS

[et] Instrumentum artificiale ORRERY ab inventore appellantum. Tobias Conrad Lotter, Geogr[apher]: execud: Augustae Vindelicorum. [Augsburg]. 1774.

Dimensões: In fólio - 50x60 cm.

Dim.: In folio - 50x60 cm.

Contemporary hand-coloured copper engraving.

A rare folio showing two different items: an armillary sphere and a planetarium.

Both items have bilingual descriptions in Latin and German. The first one - the Sphera Armillaris with the Zodiac, the Horizon, the Months and Hours - have the usual details represented on this kind of item. The second item, also called in the description: «De machina artificiali Orrery dicta ab inventione» is a mechanical Planetarium representing the movement of the inner planets of the Solar System, Mercury and Venus, the Earth, and the Moon. It was built by J. Rowley for C. Boyle. Earl of Orrery, probably at the beginning of the 18th Century.

Tobbias Lotter Conrad was a German publisher and engraver who married the daughter of the elder Matthaus Seutter. He engraved many of Seuter’s maps and was eventually successful in business in 1756, becoming one of the best known cartographers of the 18th Century German School.

Lotter’s maps always have elaborated cartouches and very decorative designs. In this case the furniture of the Planetarium is a very interesting period design containing a time clock movement with the Transit of Venus and Mercury, circulating in different table dials. The text contains very important scientific information about the distances and dimensions of the Sun and the inner planets of the Solar System.
