Dim.: 47x33.8 cm with [ii], 4, pp. and 100 folios.

Contemporary binding with raised bands, gilt tools, and red label on the leather spine.

Illustrated with the reproduction of 100 prints of the 15th through the 18th century, being the first one in the book a frontispiece dated 1866.

Copy with author´s dedication “à mon ami Bourquelot” at the right bottom of the title page, and an ex-libris of João Paulo de Abreu e Lima glued inside the back of the front board.

Magnificent and beautiful edition in big format presenting a very sharp print on very sturdy linen paper, printed in Paris by the print house of Ad. Lainé et J. Harvard.

The first two pages contain the title page with blank verse, and the four pages in Roman numerals include the presentation of the technical characteristics of the work and a list of the old engravers, with biographic information, whose works are reproduced in this book.

This is the first great work by Baldus, in which he shows his aesthetical sensibility and his technical expertise, using the process of heliogravure to produce high quality photogravures of ornamental engravings by great masters from the 15th through the 18th century like Aldegrever, Beham, Mestre IB, Boyvin, De Bry, Delanne, Durer, Ducerceau, Holbein, Janz, Lepaurtre, Van Leyden, Marot, Solis, Vico, or Woeiriot.

Edouard-Denis Baldus (Grünebach, Alemanha, 1813 – Paris, 1889) was photographer, engraver and studied Painting. It was a main and pioneer figure of the early days of French photography, founding member of the Heliographic Society in 1851, and member of the French Photography Society from 1857 to 1882. He distinguished himself in photography, having invented the heliogravure process, which he first presented on 1854, and which allowed a high quality dissemination of photos of works of art, monuments and landscapes.

Baldus was also one of the pioneers of phototype (reproduce the photo on metal printing blocks using photogravure to reproduce a photograph in printing) perfectly imitating the intaglio metal plates, as seen in the 15th century decorative frontispiece opening this work . The heliographic process of Baldus was mentioned, described and twice given as an example in the work of Blanquart-Evrard from 1869 - «La Photographie, Ses Origines, Ses Progrés, Ses Transformations», a work that registers the main technical contributions of the new processes to reproduce images.
