Vide como referência bibliográfica: Spalding, Francis (1953) in Mudejar Ornament in Manuscripts.

- A Vigília no fólio xvii (Hodie scietis…);

- Missa Maior do Dia de Natal no fólio xxvii (Puer natus…);

- Ofício In Cómõe B. V. Maria no fólio xxix (Vultum tuum…),

Ad Missa[m] Off. Diem Domine Pacifice Loqbant Tract Dicat Off. DNS CS [Dominus Christo] DNE ME TRADIDENS. Domenica i. Ramus Palmae Dn Benedicat Sanctos Ramos. Segue-se a antífona: Palmae fuerunt in manibus sanctorum et magno clamore […].

Relativamente à partitura verbal deste palimpsesto recolhemos a seguinte paleografia:

[…] Dominum preparatum invenit p. Jubilate | Mecum enim habeo custodem corpus mei angelum | Domini ??? ??? dominus mei + benedicate peter domini | mei ??? ??? qua per filium tuum ignis exunct | est […]

In Gloria DÑO […[ laudare Spe tua […] | Agnes in medio flamarum expulsis | DS [Dominus] qui in firma […] Die Añie Laudium. | S […] Beata Agnes in incolo flame [expulsis ?]

Último cântico do fólio palimpsesto: A Matutinu[m]. In. Vitat. Vincentem mundum adoremus dominum in quo pressuram mundi martyr vicit Vincentius.

 ANTIPHONARYY. 14th / 15th CENTURY MUDEJAR ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON PARCHMENT - IBERIAN PLAINCHANT BOOK FROM THE ADVENT UNTIL EASTER.

130 numbered folios from II to CXXX with musical scores + 1 Index folio.

Folios of 53x39 cm. Boards of 59x43 cm.

Contemporary binding in wood, covered with leather, with metal hardware, metal knobs and traces of the metal clasps. Some defects on the hardware. The spine has been professionally repaired, and inside the headbands are intact.

A magnificent work having its origins in the Iberian Peninsula – Portugal or South of Spain, coming from the Capucho collection.

Illustrated with a fabulous illuminated title page, with a geometric red and blue frame. Throughout the text there are 276 illuminated capital letters, Moorish style, i.e. Gothic-Arabian Iberian style. Some folios present small spots caused by the wax of candles.

The mass book is entirely composed of musical scores, single hand written, with very firm and regular calligraphy. The musical notation has five lines, a characteristic of the Iberian medieval mass books. Its contents have a perfect graphic consistency in the musical scores (40 lines per page), and in the drawing of the capital letters.

The missal is composed entirely of musical scores handwritten in a single, firm and regular hand. The musical notation is 5 lines, characteristic of medieval peninsular missals. Its content has perfect graphic unity in the musical staves (40 lines per page) and in the design of the capitular letters. The capitulars are of two different types: a) the Gothic letters in black ink and not illuminated throughout the body of the text; b) the 276 Lombard letters, illuminated, at the beginning of the masses and psalms, finely drawn in linear lines in the style of the 'filigree' lettering of the Mozarabic tradition. Among the 276 filigree letters, there are two subtypes: single-colour body letters (218 letters) and two-colour body letters (58). The latter establish the style and origin of the missal through the shapes of the partition between the blue field and the red field of the body of the letter, leaving a small white line between the two colours, and containing an oriental-style foliate design.

The decoration of the initial folio consists of interlaced medallions, fillets and quadrilongs, forming interlaced geometric figures (with loops or "lassoes") in the tradition of Mozarabic esoteric symbolism. The largest medallion on this folio (at the foot of the page) was drawn in the Peninsular Arabic style with the kufic spelling of an allafia. That is, reproducing the word of greeting in the name of the Merciful Allah, but removed from the centre of the alafia [alafia is a Peninsular Arabic word 'al afiyah' which designates the symbol of the greeting]. In Portugal, the best examples of this calligraphic art can be found in the Conimbricense codices and in Spain in the Sevillian codices.

See bibliography: Spalding, Francis (1953) in Mudejar Ornament in Manuscripts. This researcher from the Hispanic Society of America collected all the graphic elements that identify Mudejar or Mozarabic manuscripts and their geographical dispersion in Spain.

The initial folio with the frontispiece is numbered II, may be missing a full illuminated folio, which is very unlikely because normally these manuscripts when complete have the pairing foliation. It is very likely that initially there was a blank initial folio as it is present at the end with the index.

The index of this antiphonary is a final, blank, unnumbered folio, most likely handwritten on both sides in the sixteenth century, and the same checks that this chant is complete.

Initial folio: 1st Sunday of Advent [with the illuminated capitular A; followed by the illuminated capitular E [Exaude nos domine…]; followed by the illuminated capital A [Ad te levavi animam meam…]. This antiphonary book ends on Palm Sunday, on folio CXXVI [Domine ne longe...], and is followed by part of the song Oficium Improperium at folio cxxx (Pater si non potest…) with a note (said claim) of passage to the following antiphonary book with the continuation of the annual liturgy.

In this antiphonary we quote the songs of the following services:

- The Vigil on folio xvii (Hodie scietis…);

- Christmas Day High Mass on folio xxvii (Puer natus…);

- Service In Cómõe B. V. Maria in folio xxix (Vultum tuum…),

- Epiphany Day on folio xxxii (Ecce advenit…).

- Palm Day on folio cxvii with a long definition of the ritual: Sabbo. Ad Missa[m] Off. Diem Domine Pacifice Loqbant Tract Dicat Off. DNS CS [Dominus Christo] DNE ME TRADIDENS. Domenica i. Ramus Palmae Dn Benedicat Sanctos Ramos. This is followed by the antiphon: Palmae fuerunt in manibus sanctorum et magno clamore […]. This folio contains a marginal reference [Osana colegert cxxii] to sing the ossanas on the following folio cxxii [Osana Filio David Benedictus… o Rex Israel Osana in Excelsis].

Comparison of the chapter letters with Spalding's references (1953):

Capital letter T monocolour (on folio xxviii) and capital letter T two-colour (on folio lxxvii); see figure 9 «Page from the Ethics of Aristotle. Fifteenth century».

Capital letter S two-colour (on folio ciiii); see figure 23 «Page of an antiphonaryy. Fifteenth century. The Hispanica Society of America».

Capital letter P two-colour (on folio x); see «Leaf from a missal. Fifteenth century. Madrid. Museo Arqueologico Nacional».

Capital letter I two-colour (on the back of the last folio cxxx); see figures 29 and 30 «Initials. Fifteenth century. The Hispanica Society of America».

Round capital letter P in black and not illuminated (on the back of folio lxii); see figure 10 «Initials in an antiphonaryy. Fifteenth century. The Hispanic Society of America».

The front pastedown presents a folio in palimpsest, from a medieval antiphonaryy (possibly Provencal of about 1200) with musical notation on a single line. Regarding the verbal score of this palimpsest we have the following paleography: [...] Dominum preparatum invenit p. Jubilate | Mecum enim habeo custodem corpus mei angelum | Domini ??? ??? dominic mei + benedicate peter domini | mei ??? ??? qua per filium tuum ignis exunct | is [...] In Gloria DÑO [... [laudare Spe tua [...] | Agnes in medio flamarum expulsis | DS [Dominus] qui in signature [...] Die Añie Laudium. | S [...] Beata Agnes in incolo flame [expulsis?].

Last song of the palimpsest folio: A Matutinu [m]. In. Vitat. Vincentem mundum adoremus dominum in quo pressuram mundi martyr vicit Vincentius.
