In folio. 27.5x19.5 cm. with (lx)-180 pp.

Contemporary flexible parchment binding, with small defects.

Illustrated with 4 engravings printed in red.

Copy in excellent condition, with very resounding paper, handwritten ownership title on the title page: 'Sotto Mayor'.

Beautiful baroque print, adorned with vignettes and woodcut capitals. Each engraving represents one of the four crosses of Christ, used by the brothers of the various ranks of the order. This military order originated from the extinction of the Knights Templar order.

Contains, besides the prologue (where the bulls of the foundation of the Order are transcribed, and the union of its masters to the Crown, etc.), four books or parts. The first deals with the foundation and creation of the order, with what concerns it: the second with the provision of the commendations, the obligations of the commandors, etc.: the third with ecclesiastical jurisdiction, and how to exercise it: the fourth with the privileges of the order, ending with a list of all the commendations, and a description of the income from each one.

The third edition of this work, the first having been published in 1628, the second in 1671 and a fourth edition in 1746.

The Order of Christ was founded by the Bull < em>Ad ea ex quibus of pope John XXIII (14-3-1319) as a result of a long negotiation over the fate of the Temple"s assets in Portugal. In 1312, when the Order of the Temple became extinct, its assets in the Peninsula were not handed over to the Hospitallers. The Portuguese monarch insisted (1313-1318) on the Templars being linked to the service of the king and the defence of the kingdom. Perhaps influenced by the solution found in Aragon, with the creation of the Order of Montesa, he opted to plead (1318) for the creation of a new militia of Christ, based in Castro Marim near the maritime border with the lands of the Moors.

Using new technical solutions brought from Palestine, the castle of Tomar was built (1160-1171) to house the convent of the Order of the Knights Templar. A polygonal church (known as the Charola) was built, closely modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. This church already had its own seal (1181) and was sometimes referred to as the Monastery of the Order (1209), housing a large community. Although its actual size is not known, it may have had thirty professed members, just as the Convent of the Order of Christ would later have.
