A work of utmost interest for the Portuguese economic history of the 17th century and also for the study of the succession law in Portugal.

The position and title of High-Courier of the Kingdom was created in 1520 by His Highness King Manuel I, granting the title to Luís Homem. Until 1606, the king nominated the High-Courier, but then Philip II sold the position as a hereditary title to the 5th High-Courier, Luís Gomes da Mata Coronel. In 1641 this was confirmed by His Highness King João IV, declaring that all the male firstborns were to inherit the title and position. Finally in 1797, Queen Maria I declared the hereditary position extinguished. The State got the monopoly of the post-office and the Sousa Coutinho family that had the title and position for more than 200 years, received as last reward pecuniary benefits, a promotion in the military career, and the title of Marquis of Penafiel.

The Ancient Art Museum in Lisbon has a portrait, by an anonymous author, of the 6th High-Courier, António Gomes da Matta.

Bibliographic Note Transcript [free translation]: «It is not mentioned by the Lusitan Library or the catalogue of [...] This testament is the most complete contrast against the suspicions that someone intended to spread about the faith of the High-Courier , as shown in a document existing in the British Museum, Egertonian library, codex nº 1133, Tome 3º, folio 158, and that according to the extract given by Figanier and in the respective Catalogue, page 222 is a Petition of Cristóvão de Sousa Coutinho, Master of the Baião House in Portugal, for the post of High-Courier, basing his intent in the fact that he married without dowry the eldest daughter of Manuel de Gouveia, deceased with no male child, and last of his family and who had this profession. António Gomes da Matta had the job but since he was a Hebrew he deemed convenient to keep it, etc. || The job of High-Courier was granted to Luís Gomes da Mata by King Philip II, and later confirmed by His Highness King João IV for him and all his descendants.
