20th century binding with percale spine.

Illustrated on the last 3 pages with the order of battle of the Spanish army in this Oran expedition, the plan of the stronghold and the explanation of the figures.

Copies with marginal restorations and slight paper faults, without affecting the text area, in the 1st part and moth holes in the margins without affecting the text, in the 2nd part.

A very rare work complete with both parts and the engravings. It describes the Spanish army"s conquest of the stronghold of Oran in North Africa and the military confrontations that followed.

Oran is the second largest city in modern Algeria. After unsuccessful attempts by the Portuguese to conquer the city in 1501, the Spanish occupied it from 1509 to 1708, but lost their rule due to the War of the Spanish Succession that began in 1700 with the death of Carlos II, who had no descendants. So one of the first aims of the new dynasty that reigned in Spain was to reconquer this strategic point in the Mediterranean, an event that is recounted in detail in these leaflets and which led to a period of Spanish domination between 1732 and 1792. Spain eventually gave up this piece of territory because the city suffered major destruction in the earthquake of 1790.

José Freire Monterroio Mascarenhas (Lisbon 1670 - 1760) was a writer and one of the pioneers of journalism in Portugal. He was editor of the 'Gazeta de Lisboa' which began publication in 1715 and published a large number of pamphlets giving detailed news of all the most important events of his time, in Europe and in various parts of the world.

Inocêncio says it seems that Monterroio made two different editions in the same year. Both are very uncommon, as are all of Monterroio"s writings in general.
