In 8º. 11x6 cm. [xvi], 498, [ii] pp.

Binding: Full calf with gilt tools on spine. Red edges.

Illustrated with a beautifully engraved frontispiece, with the title to the centre topped by the necklace of the Order of the Golden Fleece and surrounded by ten coats of arms of the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula ruled by the Spanish kings of the House of Austria.

Copy with an armorial ex libris of “Smart Lethieullier of Alldersbrook of Essex County”, glued on the back of the frontispiece. It shows slight handling wear on the binding, especially on the corners and the hinge head. Traces of engraving of the title on a black label (second panel) now non-existent.

The preliminary pages contain the author’s dedication to Edward Powel, dated late December 1628, the chapters" index and a topographical index. The final page presents the ten-year Suma do Privilégio [Summary of the Privilege], dated 'The Hague, 15 May 1626', in favour of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir.

Magnificent Elzevir edition printed in Leiden, the Netherlands, very rare (there is another edition of the same date with 520 pages, which is more common. Vd. Monteverde, 3018) with beautiful printing in very small and sharp characters, with decorated capital letters at the beginning of each chapter.

This work is very important for the study and knowledge of the state of affairs of the Iberian Peninsula in the first quarter of the 17th century and for the study of the interest that the Peninsula was generating in Europe, and especially in the Netherlands, at that time. The author uses the works of several Portuguese and foreign authors as souces always mentioning them, which shows the seriousness of his work.

The work describes in detail the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula and their domains around the world. The Kingdom of Portugal is described in the general part (pages 45 to 63). Its territories around the world are described in chapters VII (Africa and Atlantic), VIII (India and Asia) and IX (Brazil), after the descriptions made by Nicolau Oliveira.

The author does not limit himself to a mere geographical description, but also describes the characteristics of the inhabitants, the forms of government, the succession of the Spanish Kings in the crown of Portugal according to Conestagio (pages 268 to 282), the noble families (the Portuguese ones according to Damião de Góis on pages 352 to 357), the popes and prelates from the Peninsula and the military orders, (those of Portugal on pages 368 to 373), the coins of each kingdom (Portugal on page 376) the domestic product of each kingdom (Portugal on pages 402 to 414) the power of the Hispanic kingdoms (Portugal is referred to on pages 456 to 467, among others).

The author also devotes two chapters to analysing the causes of the low population density of the Peninsula and the lack of money from the Royal treasury.
