Rara versão de circulação restrita em meios académicos desta dissertação de licenciatura em História da Arte e Arqueologia, realizada na Universidade Livre de Bruxelas. A BNP não tem exemplares catalogados, assim como a maioria das bibliotecas portuguesas. Foram publicadas duas edições: a 1.ª edição como suplemento da revista Arts d’Afrique Noire em outubro de 1976, e uma 2.ª edição, em 1978 pela editora Arts d’Afrique Noire, em Arnouville (França).

Estudo fundamental sobre a iconografia e a tradição cultural Chokwe/Tshokwe associada à figura mítica de Tshibinda Ilunga, herói civilizador ligado às tradições lunda e chokwe da África Central. Tshibinda Ilunga é uma figura central das tradições lunda. Segundo a tradição oral, era um príncipe luba que introduziu técnicas de caça, estruturas políticas e elementos culturais avançados no reino lunda, tornando-se posteriormente um herói civilizador venerado pelos chokwe/tshokwe. Considerado uma referência clássica na história da arte africana e da antropologia visual africana. Além do valor acadêmico, a obra contribuiu para valorizar patrimônios culturais de Angola e República Democrática do Congo, e ajuda a preservar tradições visuais e históricas num período em que muitos objetos africanos eram estudados apenas como “arte tribal”, sem contextualização histórica profunda.

A etnia Chokwe é um povo bantu que vive principalmente em Angola, na República Democrática do Congo e na Zâmbia. Destaca-se pela sua rica cultura, especialmente pelas máscaras, esculturas em madeira, danças e tradições orais. Tradicionalmente dedicam-se à agricultura, caça e comércio, preservando um importante património cultural africano.

Segundo volume corresponde a um apêndice (documentação complementar, notas, ilustrações ou materiais de suporte). Funciona como uma base documental e analítica do trabalho, reunindo materiais que sustentam a interpretação iconográfica do primeiro volume. Contém essencialmente quatro tipos de matéria: 1. Dossiê iconográfico (peças e variantes); 2. Catálogo de peças analisadas; 3. Documentação etnográfica e oral; e 4. Notas analíticas e comparativas. Alguns artigos encontram-se em português e alemão.

Marie-Louise Bastin (Etterbeek, Bélgica, 1918 – Porto, 2000) foi docente, investigadora, historiadora da arte de formação e antropóloga por vocação, pioneira no estudo, preservação e divulgação da História e Cultura Cokwe (Angola). Frequentou e concluiu os estudos secundários com distinção (1936-1940). Licenciou-se em 1966 e doutorou-se em História de Arte e Arqueologia na Faculdade de Filosofia e Letras da Universidade Livre de Bruxelas, em 1973. As dissertações que apresentou foram orientadas pelo antropólogo, cineasta e escritor Luc de Heusch (1927-2012). Foi investigadora de arte africana nesta instituição (1969-1972) e assistente do Professor Luc de Heusch. Foi encarregada de curso ('charge de cours') entre 1978 e 1989, ano em que se aposentou.

Realizou trabalhos de campo em museus de praticamente todos os lugares onde existia arte tshokwe, entre os anos 60 e 80, nomeadamente no Museu do Dundo, em Angola, em museus europeus e americanos e nos museus etnológicos de Lisboa, Porto e Coimbra. Entre as suas principais obras contam-se Art Décoratif Tshokwe (1961), Tshibinda Ilunga: héros civilisateur – à propos de statuettes Tshokwe représentant un chasseur (dissertação de licenciatura, 1966), La sculpture Tshokwe: essai iconographique et stylistique (tese de doutoramento, 1973), Statuette Tshokwe (1978), La Sculpture Tshokwe (1982), Introduction aux arts d’Afrique (1984), Escultura angolana (1994) e De Sculpture van Angola (1995).

Copy with slight damage to the covers, label with shelf number on the front cover and spine, and an oleographic stamp indicating ownership by Mesquitela Lima, a distinguished anthropologist, collector of African art, friend of the author and scholar of the same subjects.

A rare version of this bachelor’s thesis in Art History and Archaeology, completed at the Free University of Brussels, which was circulated only within academic circles. The BNP )Portuguese National Library) has no catalogued copies, nor do most Portuguese libraries. Two editions were published: the first edition as a supplement to the journal Arts d’Afrique Noire in October 1976, and a second edition in 1978 by the publisher Arts d’Afrique Noire, in Arnouville (France).

A seminal study on the iconography and cultural tradition of the Chokwe/Tshokwe people associated with the mythical figure of Tshibinda Ilunga, a civilising hero linked to the Lunda and Chokwe traditions of Central Africa. Tshibinda Ilunga is a central figure in Lunda traditions. According to oral tradition, he was a Luba prince who introduced hunting techniques, political structures and advanced cultural elements to the Lunda kingdom, later becoming a civilising hero revered by the Chokwe/Tshokwe. Considered a classic reference in the history of African art and African visual anthropology. In addition to its academic value, the work has helped to promote the cultural heritage of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and contributes to the preservation of visual and historical traditions at a time when many African artefacts were studied merely as ‘tribal art’, without any in-depth historical context.

The Chokwe are a Bantu people who live mainly in Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. They are renowned for their rich culture, particularly their masks, wood carvings, dances and oral traditions. Traditionally, they have engaged in agriculture, hunting and trade, thereby preserving an important part of Africa’s cultural heritage.

The second volume consists of an appendix (supplementary documentation, notes, illustrations or supporting materials). It serves as a documentary and analytical foundation for the work, bringing together materials that underpin the iconographic interpretation presented in the first volume. It essentially contains four types of material: 1. Iconographic dossier (artifacts and variants); 2. Catalogue of analysed artifacts; 3. Ethnographic and oral documentation; and 4. Analytical and comparative notes. Some articles are in Portuguese and German.

Marie-Louise Bastin (Etterbeek, 1918 – Porto, 2000) was a lecturer, researcher, art historian by training and anthropologist by vocation, a pioneer in the study, preservation and dissemination of Chokwe history and culture (Angola). She attended secondary school and completed her secondary education with distinction (1936–1940). She graduated in 1966 and obtained her PhD in Art History and Archaeology from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the Free University of Brussels in 1973. Her theses were supervised by the anthropologist, filmmaker and writer Luc de Heusch (1927–2012). She was a researcher in African art at this institution (1969–1972) and an assistant to Professor Luc de Heusch. She held the position of lecturer (‘charge de cours’) between 1978 and 1989, the year in which she retired.

She carried out fieldwork in museums in virtually every place where Tshokwe art was to be found, between the 1960s and 1980s, notably at the Dundo Museum in Angola, in European and American museums, and in the ethnological museums of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra. Her major works include Art Décoratif Tshokwe (1961), Tshibinda Ilunga: héros civilisateur – à propos de statuettes Tshokwe représentant un chasseur (undergraduate dissertation, 1966), La sculpture Tshokwe: an iconographic and stylistic essay (doctoral thesis, 1973), *Tshokwe Statuette* (1978), *Tshokwe Sculpture* (1982), *Introduction to African Arts* (1984), *Angolan Sculpture* (1994) and *De Sculpture van Angola* (1995).
