A obra não é sobre a história de Macau, mas, como o subtítulo indica, um estudo de episódios e períodos-chave ligados à história da colônia, centrado em personalidades típicas da época, os Fidalgos, originalmente aplicado aos chamados cavalheiros de sangue e armadura, mas na obra e usado no sentido de homens que eram personalidades por direito próprio, por mais duvidosa ou obscura que fosse sua origem.

Charles Ralph Boxer (1904–2000) foi um eminente historiador britânico, amplamente reconhecido como a maior autoridade estrangeira no estudo da expansão marítima de Portugal e da Holanda. A sua vida foi marcada por uma carreira que combinou a ação militar com a erudição académica. Apesar de não possuir formação universitária formal inicial, a sua vasta obra levou-o a ocupar prestigiadas cátedras. Foi o titular da Cátedra Camões no King's College London (1947–1967) e lecionou também em universidades americanas como Yale e Indiana.

Publicou mais de 300 trabalhos, incluindo clássicos como O Império Marítimo Português e O Império Marítimo Holandês. Em 1963, a sua obra Relações Raça no Império Colonial Português gerou grande controvérsia e furor no regime de Salazar ao questionar o mito do luso-tropicalismo e a ausência de racismo na colonização portuguesa. Pela sua vasta contribuição, recebeu diversas distinções em Portugal, incluindo a Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique.

Bibliófilo apaixonado, reuniu uma das mais importantes coleções privadas do mundo de manuscritos e livros raros sobre a história colonial, conhecida como a Biblioteca Boxeriana.

The work is not about the history of Macau, but, as the subtitle indicates, a study of key episodes and periods linked to the history of the colony, focusing on typical personalities of the time, the Fidalgos, originally applied to the so-called knights of blood and armour, but in the work used in the sense of men who were personalities in their own right, however dubious or obscure their origins may have been.

Charles Ralph Boxer (1904–2000) was an eminent British historian, widely recognised as the foremost foreign authority on the maritime expansion of Portugal and the Netherlands. His life was marked by a career that combined military action with academic scholarship. Although he did not initially have a formal university education, his extensive work led him to occupy prestigious chairs. He was the holder of the Camões Chair at King"s College London (1947–1967) and also taught at American universities such as Yale and Indiana.

He published over 300 works, including classics such as The Portuguese Maritime Empire and The Dutch Maritime Empire. In 1963, his work Race Relations in the Portuguese Colonial Empire caused great controversy and furor in Salazar"s regime by questioning the myth of Luso-tropicalism and the absence of racism in Portuguese colonisation. For his vast contribution, he received several distinctions in Portugal, including the “Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique”.

A passionate bibliophile, he assembled one of the world"s most important private collections of manuscripts and rare books on colonial history, known as the Bibliotheca boxeriana (Boxerian Library).
