Encadernação em pele com rótulo em pele e ferros a ouro na lombada, seixas e nas pastas em formato esquadria, lombada e cantos com reforço em material recente a imitar antigo. Cortes das folhas dourados. Preserva as folhas de guarda antigas, coladas a folhas de guarda recentes em papel marmoreado a imitar antigo.

Impressão nítida sobre papel de linho de muita qualidade, em caracteres redondos, a preto e vermelho na folha de rosto, e itálicos nomeadamente na folha de rosto, títulos correntes e alguns poucos no texto. Folha de rosto ornamentado com uma pequena gravura, um cabeção e inicial decorativo com motivos vegetalista no início da obra, e pequenos florões de remate. Inclui um cabeção no início do catálogo editorial.

Exemplar com vestígio de etiqueta na pasta anterior, ligeiras manchas na pasta posterior, furo de traça no canto superior das folhas junto ao festo até a página 62, nota a tinta, assinatura de posse coeva na folha de rosto e algumas falhas tipográficas nas últimas folhas.

Rara primeira edição de uma das primeiras biografias de Baruch Spinoza, publicada em Haia, 28 anos após a morte. Foram posteriormente publicadas edições populares.

Biografia em que o autor procura descrever não só o pensamento do filósofo, mas também captar o clima da época através do contacto directo com pessoas que o conheceram, onde recolheu testemunhos sobre a sua vida e os seus costumes.

Baruch Spinoza (Amsterdão, 1632 - Haia, 1677), também conhecido pelo seu pseudónimo Benedictus de Spinoza, foi um proeminente filosofo holandês de origem judaico-portuguesa, filho de uma família perseguida pela inquisição, em Portugal, que se refugiou na Sinagoga Portuguesa de Amesterdão. Um dos percursores da era do iluminismo, e considerado um dos grandes racionalistas da filosofia do século XVII. Foi um profundo estudioso da Bíblia, do Talmude e de obras de judeus, também se dedicou ao estudo de Sócrates, Platão, Aristóteles, Demócrito, Epicuro, Lucrécio e Giordano Bruno. Viveu uma vida aparentemente simples, ao longo da sua vida recusou recompensas e homenagens, incluindo posições de ensino e prestígio, e morreu aos 44 anos.

Johannes Köhler, também conhecido como Jean Colerus e Johannes Nicolaus Colerus (Düsseldorf, 1647- Haia, 1707), pregador luterano holandês da escola de Wittenberg. Frequentou a escola em Solingen e Dortmund, a partir de 1665 estudou na Universidade de Gießen, Colégio de Worms em 1668 e na Universidade de Estrasburgo em 1669. Em 1678 foi chamado para a Holanda, onde trabalhou como pregador do alto alemão em várias congregações luteranas. Participou nas disputas que levaram à secessão da União de Haia.

Preserved original endpapers, mounted on recent marbled endpapers imitating antique.

Clear printing on high quality linen paper, in round characters, black and red on the title page, and italics, particularly on the title page, current titles and a few in the text. The title page is decorated with a small engraving, a headpiece and a decorative initial with plant motifs at the beginning of the work, and small finishing fleurons. Includes a header at the beginning of the editorial catalogue.

Copy with a trace of a label on the front board, slight stains on the back board, a moth hole in the top corner of the pages next to the inner hinge up to page 62, a note in ink, a coeval ownership handwritten title on the title page and some typographical flaws on the last few pages.

Contains a small printed errata and editorial catalogue on the final pages.

Biography in which the author endeavours to describe not only the philosopher's thought, but also to capture the climate of the time through direct contact with people who knew him, and where the author collected testimonies about Baruch’s life and customs.

Baruch Spinoza (Amsterdam, 1632 - The Hague, 1677), also known by his pseudonym Benedictus de Spinoza, was a prominent Dutch philosopher of Jewish-Portuguese origin, the son of a family persecuted by the Inquisition in Portugal, who took refuge in the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam. One of the forerunners of the age of enlightenment, and considered one of the great rationalists of 17th century philosophy. He was a profound scholar of the Bible, the Talmud and Jewish works, and also dedicated himself to the study of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Democritus, Epicurus, Lucretius and Giordano Bruno. He lived an apparently simple life, throughout his life he refused rewards and honours, including teaching positions and prestige, and died at the age of 44.

Johannes Köhler, also known as Jean Colerus and Johannes Nicolaus Colerus (Düsseldorf, 1647 - The Hague, 1707), Dutch Lutheran preacher of the Wittenberg school. He attended school in Solingen and Dortmund, from 1665 he studied at the University of Gießen, the College of Worms in 1668 and the University of Strasbourg in 1669. In 1678 he was called to Holland, where he worked as a High German preacher in various Lutheran congregations. He took part in the disputes that led to the secession of the Hague Union.
