Encadernação da época inteira de pele, com rótulo vermelho, nervos e ferros a ouro em casas fechadas na lombada e com ferros a ouro nas pastas onde formam uma bela esquadria com uma decoração muito elaborada constituída por motivos vegetalistas e triplas ovais. Com folhas de guarda em belo papel marmoreado da época. Cortes das folhas dourados.

Folha de rosto impressa a negro e vermelho, enquadrado por duas esquadrias duplas, com o filete interior e o exterior mais grossos e com bela gravura de Debrie, no centro inferior, apresentando um conjunto de figuras alegóricas da coroação do rei D. José I de Portugal, com anjos com trombetas, um halo e um ramo de louros.

Impressão muito nítida em belos caracteres redondos e alguns itálicos na dedicatória e nos títulos das licenças. Belíssimo e muito elaborado cabeção da autoria de Debrie, no início da dedicatória, com o retrato do Rei D. José, em busto, ao centro, sobre uma peanha com as armas de Portugal, rodeado de símbolos militares e de poder, como pendões, lanças, espadas e canhões, tendo de cada lado as figuras da História e da Justiça, com uma coroa de louros na mão direita e uma figura de menino que despeja uma cornucópia, símbolo da justiça e das riquezas que o Rei distribuirá. Ao fundo, à direita, um arco alusivo a triunfos futuros e, todo este conjunto, rodeado por um complexo e muito belo enquadramento constituído por volutas e motivos vegetalistas.

Todas as páginas são enquadradas por esquadrias iguais às da folha de rosto e ilustradas com belas figuras alegóricas numa base constituída por volutas e motivos vegetalistas, com duas figuras alegóricas aladas, uma da fama com trombeta e outra com a coroa, símbolo do poder real. Por cima, num círculo e em diversos rectângulos, inscrevem-se os nomes dos ascendentes de D. José.

Exemplar com etiqueta de biblioteca no interior da encadernação preenchida com cota.

Rara, única e magnífica edição impressa sobre papel de linho muito encorpado e com uma grande beleza e equilíbrio do trabalho tipográfico e das ilustrações e decorações a cargo de Debrie, um dos maiores gravadores que trabalhou no nosso país, sendo um exemplo marcante da época de ouro da tipografia em Portugal.

Folhas preliminares contêm a dedicatória ao Rei D. José I, as licenças com extensas aprovações de Inácio Barbosa Machado e de Luís Francisco Pimentel, datadas de 8 de Maio de 1753 e 2 de Junho de 1753. As três páginas finais estão em branco.

Contêm cento e uma linhas genealógicas dos ascendentes do rei D. José I, todas provenientes dos descendentes do rei D. João I, trabalho que o autor declara ser a sua primeira obra e que é um contributo para propagandear e reforçar a legitimidade de D. José I. Nelas Sarmento Velasques demonstra repetidamente a origem dos Duques de Bragança, que eram a dinastia reinante e cujo prestígio estava fundado no facto de o título ter sido concedido, em 30 de Dezembro de 1442, a um filho de D. João I, que o rei teve antes de casar e que por sua vez casou, em 1401, com a única filha do amigo do Rei, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, herói e santo.

Por outro lado, depois da grande crise dinástica em que o avô de D. José, D. Pedro II, afastou do poder o seu irmão mais velho, D. Afonso VI e se casou com a mulher dele, depois de um processo de anulação do casamento escandaloso e sem precedentes na história de Portugal, os reis D. Pedro II, D. João V, e D. José tiveram sempre uma extrema susceptibilidade e uma grande preocupação em afirmar a sua legitimidade.

O autor desta obra deverá ter tido em vista não só a sua promoção social como também a concessão de benefícios à região de onde era oriunda a sua família, onde se situavam Penela e Espinhal.

José de Alarcão Velasques Sarmento (Penela, Coimbra, 1728 - ) Genealogista, filho primogénito de António de Castro Sarmento, e D. Anna Maria dos Prazeres Cortez de Macedo. Seguiu a profissão militar, e foi tenente de infantaria no regimento chamado então do Marquês das Minas. Casou em Lisboa em 16 de Maio de 1770, com D. Anna Victoria de Brito e Menezes, da qual deixou descendência, que deu origem aos Alarcões de Lisboa. Diversos membros da família Velasques Sarmento, segundo Mata, (2014) ocuparam funções nos órgãos do poder local de Penela.

Guilherme Lourenço Francisco Debrie (? - 1755?) Notável gravador francês, que se instalou em Portugal desde 1731, onde casou com D. Antónia Maurícia Bobone e teve um filho que também foi gravador. É autor de mais de 400 trabalhos, quase todos para ilustrar livros, entre eles, os mais belos que se publicaram no reinado de D. João V.

Title page printed in black and red, framed by two double frames, with the inner and outer fillets thicker and with a beautiful engraving by Debrie, in the lower centre, showing a set of allegorical figures from the coronation of King José I of Portugal, with angels with trumpets, a halo and a laurel branch.

Very clear printing in beautiful round characters and some italics in the dedication and licence titles. Beautiful and very elaborate headpiece by Debrie, at the beginning of the dedication, with the portrait of King José, in bust, in the centre, on a pedestal with the arms of Portugal, surrounded by military symbols and symbols of power, such as pennants, spears, swords and cannons, with the figures of History and Justice on each side, with a laurel wreath in his right hand and a figure of a boy pouring a cornucopia, symbol of justice and the riches that the King will distribute. In the background, to the right, is an arch alluding to future triumphs, and the whole ensemble is surrounded by a complex and very beautiful framework made up of volutes and plant motifs.

Every page is framed the same way as the title page and illustrated with beautiful allegorical figures on a base made up of volutes and plant motifs, with two winged allegorical figures, one of fame with a trumpet and the other with a crown, the symbol of royal power. Above, in a circle and several rectangles, the names of King José"s ascendants are inscribed.

Rare, unique and magnificent edition printed on very thick linen paper and with a great beauty and balance of typographic work and illustrations and decorations by Debrie, one of the greatest engravers who worked in our country, being a striking example of the golden age of typography in Portugal.

Preliminary pages contain the dedication to King José I, the licences with extensive approvals from Inácio Barbosa Machado and Luís Francisco Pimentel, dated 8 May 1753 and 2 June 1753. The final three pages are blank.

Contains one hundred and one genealogical lines of the ancestors of King José I, all from the descendants of King João I, a work that the author declares to be his first and which is a contribution to advertising and strengthening the legitimacy of King José I. In them, Sarmento Velasques repeatedly demonstrates the origin of the Dukes of Bragança, who were the reigning dynasty and whose prestige was founded on the fact that the title was granted on 30 December 1442 to a son of King João I, whom the king had before marrying and who in turn married, in 1401, the only daughter of the king"s friend, Nuno Álvares Pereira, hero and saint.

On the other hand, after the great dynastic crisis in which José"s grandfather, Pedro II, removed his older brother, Afonso VI, from power and married his wife, after a scandalous and unprecedented marriage annulment process in the history of Portugal, the kings Pedro II, João V, and José were always extremely sensitive and very concerned about asserting their legitimacy.

The author of this work must have had in mind not only his social promotion, but also the granting of benefits to the region where his family came from, where Penela and Espinhal were located.

José de Alarcão Velasques Sarmento (Penela, Coimbra, 1728 - ) Genealogist, first-born son of António de Castro Sarmento and D. Anna Maria dos Prazeres Cortez Macedo. He followed the military profession and was an infantry lieutenant in the regiment then called from the Marquês das Minas. He married Anna Victoria de Brito e Menezes in Lisbon on 16 May 1770, from whom he left descendants that gave rise to the Alarcão family in Lisboa. According to Mata (2014), several members of the Velasques Sarmento family held positions in Penela"s local authorities.

Guilherme Lourenço Francisco Debrie (? - 1755?) Remarkable French engraver who settled in Portugal from 1731, where he married Antónia Maurícia Bobone and had a son who was also an engraver. He was the author of more than 400 works, almost all of which were used to illustrate books, among them the most beautiful published during the reign of King João V.
