Livro de memória com um detalhado rigor da planificação e construção das Linhas de Torres Vedras, que corresponderam a uma extensa rede de linhas defensivas construidas em segredo pela ordem directa do Comandante em Chefe Arthur Wesllesley do Exército Anglo-Português, com objectivo de defender Lisboa e deter a invasão francesa de 1810 sob comando do Marchal Masséna. Após uma breve introdução histórica, descreve o processo de construção e guarnição das Linhas de Torres Vedras.

Major General Sir John Thomas Jones, 1.º Baronete [KCB] (Landguard Fort, 1783 - Pittville, Cheltenham, 1843) foi um oficial britânico da Royal Engineers que desempenhou um papel de engenharia de liderança em uma série de campanhas europeias no início do século XIX.

Em 1805, foi promovido a segundo capitão e logo depois embarcou em Portsmouth com a expedição comandada por Sir James Craig. Em 1808 o Major Lefebure e Jones foram seleccionados para servir como dois comissários assistentes do General Leith nas províncias do norte de Espanha, actuou também em Zelândia, e em março de 1810, recebeu ordem de embarcar para Lisboa, onde foi contratado pelo coronel (mais tarde senhor) Richard Fletcher nas linhas de Torres Vedras. Esteve no Leste da Espanha, Holanda e regressou a Grâ-Bretanha no verão de 1839.

Illustrated in text with nine tables of the works that make up the lines, indicating their numbers on the ground and on the plans, corresponding to Districts Nos. 1 to 7, followed by that of the Oeiras district and a detailed table of works, troops and artillery. Hors-texte include a fold-out map of the Torres Vedras lines erected in 1810 by the Anglo-Portuguese Army to protect Lisbon, 51x55 cm, with a scale of 1:103,000, topography engraved in stone by H. Jouy and a chart by Verville Matenot, printed by V. Marten Lithography, Paris, 1840, and two fold-outs with plans and sections of the fortifications with indications of the respective scales.

Preliminary pages contain the editor's warning, a general index that includes the district tables and excludes the last 20 pages, and the author's preface. The final pages, from page 171 onwards, contain notes 1 to 5, an appendix with the author's warning, instructions sent by Lieutenant-Colonel Fletcher to the author and reports and letters from the author to Lieutenant-Colonel Fletcher. Finally, the book ends with the author's memories of the Torres Vedras lines, on sheets numbered 1 to 20.

Memoir with a detailed account of the planning and construction of the Lines of Torres Vedras, which corresponded to an extensive network of defensive lines built in secret by direct order of Commander-in-Chief Arthur Wesllesley of the Anglo-Portuguese Army, with the aim of defending Lisbon and stopping the French invasion of 1810 under the command of Marchal Masséna. After a brief historical introduction, it describes the process of building and garrisoning the Lines of Torres Vedras.

Major General Sir John Thomas Jones, 1st Baronet [KCB] (Landguard Fort, 1783 - Pittville, Cheltenham, 1843) was a British Royal Engineers officer who played a leading engineering role in a series of European campaigns in the early 19th century.

In 1805, he was promoted to second captain and soon afterwards embarked in Portsmouth with the expedition commanded by Sir James Craig. In 1808 Major Lefebure and Jones were selected to serve as General Leith's two assistant commissioners in the northern provinces of Spain, he also acted in Zeeland, and in March 1810, he was ordered to embark for Lisbon, where he was employed by Colonel (later Sir) Richard Fletcher in the Torres Vedras lines. He travelled to eastern Spain, Holland and returned to Britain in the summer of 1839.

Author of several diaries relating to his European campaigns, among them: Account of the war in Spain, Portugal and the South of France, from 1808 to 1814. In two volumes. Second edition. London, T.
