Belíssimas encadernações inteiras de pele, sobre pastas de madeira, com nervos, rótulos e elaborados ferros a ouro em casas fechadas e nas pastas em esquadria. Seixas ornamentadas com finos ferros a seco com motivos florais. Corte das folhas marmoreado em tons de vermelho, amarelo e azul, com um padrão semelhante ao das folhas de guarda. Executadas por Thomson. Edin., cuja marca se encontra impressa, em caracteres minúsculos, no canto da guarda anterior do primeiro volume.

Ilustrado com uma gravura da rainha Isabel I de Inglaterra, em extratexto e sobre papel mais encorpado, no sétimo volume. Apresenta cabeções ao início de cada capítulo, em todos os volumes.

Com notas impressas à margem e notas de rodapé dispostas em duas colunas.

Exemplar preserva uma errata do sétimo volume colocada no final, sobre folha de menores dimensões.

Os volumes são de edições distintas, sendo os quatro primeiros da quarta edição, publicados em 1867; o quinto e o sexto da terceira, também em 1867; o sétimo da primeira, em 1863; o oitavo da segunda, em 1864; e os últimos dois também da primeira, ambos em 1866. Foram publicados, em 1870, mais dois volumes, relativos aos anos finais do reinado de Elizabeth I. O décimo e último volume do presente conjunto, relata acontecimentos até Dezembro de 1573. A primeira edição revista da obra, em 1893, alterou o título da mesma para History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada.

A obra abrange a segunda parte do reinado de Henry VIII, segundo rei da Casa de Tudor, desde o ano de 1529 até Elizabeth I. De forma muito geral, os primeiros quatro volumes são alusivos ao reinado Henry VIII; o quinto a Edward VI, o sexto a Mary I; e os restantes a Elizabeth I. A Casa de Tudor governou o Reino da Inglaterra e os seus reinos, incluindo o ancestral País de Gales e a Irlanda, durante cerca de um século (1485 a 1603). Este período foi marcado por complicações em torno da sucessão real e pela Reforma anglicana, em que a Igreja da Inglaterra rompeu com a autoridade do Papa e a Igreja Romana, resultado do processo mais amplo da Reforma Protestante, estabelecendo muitas das características principais da cultura e das instituições da Grã-Bretanha.

James Anthony Froude (Devon, 1818-1894) foi um importante e popular historiador inglês. O seu estilo caracteriza-se por uma abordagem dramática (em contraste com um tratamento científico) da história, uma característica que partilhava com Thomas Carlyle, outro grande historiador inglês e uma das suas grandes influências; e pela sua simpatia e defesa da Reforma Inglesa contra as interpretações dos historiadores católicos. Consequentemente, quando os primeiros volumes da obra foram publicados em 1856, Froude foi alvo de violentas críticas, sendo um exemplo de destaque a campanha lançada por Edward Augustus Freeman no Saturday Review e mais tarde no Contemporary Review. Ainda assim a obra revelou-se um sucesso popular, continuando a ser impresso até ao século XX e estudado ainda nos dias de hoje. A par de Macaulay e Carlyle, Froude é um dos grandes historiadores vitorianos.

Beautiful full leather bindings, over wooden folders, with raised bands, labels, and elaborate gilt tools on the spine and on the framed boards. Binding edges ornamented with fine blind tools with floral motifs. Marbled leaf egeds in shades of red, yellow and blue, with a similar pattern to the endpapers. Made by Thomson. Edin., whose mark is printed, in tiny characters, in the corner of the front flyleaf of the first volume.

Illustrated with an engraving of Queen Elizabeth I of England, hors-texte and on full-bodied paper, in the seventh volume. Features headpieces at the beginning of each chapter in all volumes.

With notes printed in the margin and footnotes arranged in two columns.

Copy preserves an erratum from the seventh volume placed at the end, on a sheet of smaller dimensions.

The volumes are of diferent editions, the first four of the fourth edition being published in 1867; the fifth and sixth of the third, also in 1867; the seventh of the first, in 1863; the eighth of the second, in 1864; and the last two also of the first, both in 1866. Two more volumes, relating to the final years of Elizabeth I"s reign, were published in 1870. The tenth and last volume of the present set, relates events up to December 1573. The first revised edition of the work, in 1893, changed its title to History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada.

The work covers the second part of the reign of Henry VIII, second king of the House of Tudor, from the year 1529 to Elizabeth I. Very generally, the first four volumes are alluding to the Henry VIII reign; the fifth to Edward VI, the sixth to Mary I; and the rest to Elizabeth I. The House of Tudor ruled the Kingdom of England and its kingdoms, including the ancestral Wales and Ireland, for about a century (1485 to 1603). This period was marked by complications surrounding royal succession and the Anglican Reformation, in which the Church of England broke with the authority of the Pope and the Roman Church, a result of the broader process of the Protestant Reformation, establishing many of the key features of Britain"s culture and institutions.

James Anthony Froude (Devon, 1818-1894) was an important and popular English historian. His style is characterized by a dramatic approach (in contrast to a scientific treatment) to history, a trait he shared with Thomas Carlyle, another great English historian and one of his great influences; and by his sympathy for and defense of the English Reformation against the interpretations of Catholic historians. Consequently, when the first volumes of the work were published in 1856, Froude came under fierce criticism, a prominent example being the campaign launched by Edward Augustus Freeman in Saturday Review and later in Contemporary Review. Still the work proved to be a popular success, continuing in print into the 20th century and still studied today. Along with Macaulay and Carlyle, Froude is one of the great Victorian historians.
