It is also decorated with a set of “fleurons” at the end of chapters, the most notable for their beauty and size being those at the end of the “Taboada” and on page 27, 69, 119, 123 and 134.

Very rare and important for the study of the organisation and functioning of the finances of the Kingdom of Portugal during the 18th century.

Its 127 chapters present a set of rules and determinations about the personnel, the functions to be performed and the ways to record and control the revenues and expenses of the kingdom of Portugal and its overseas possessions in Africa, Asia and Brazil (Cap.18). In 1751 a royal decree recommended the observance of these regulations.

The ”casa dos contos” was an institution for ordering and supervising the revenues and expenditures of the Crown, which existed from the 13th century until 1761, when it was replaced by the Erário Régio. From 1627 onwards it took on the functions of central accounting institution and tax court of last instance. The oldest “Regimento dos Contos” dates from 5 July 1378. It was followed by others in 1419, 1434, 1560 and 1627. Part of its functions are today performed by the Tribunal de Contas (Court of Auditors).
