2 Works bound in one volume. In octavo. 11.5x6.3 cm. [xvi], 460, [xii] pp. Full contemporary parchment with handwritten title in coeval ink at the head of the spine.

Illustrated with beautifully engraved frontispiece, with the arms of Portugal in the centre topped by a cartouche with the title of the work and with another cartouche underneath with the printers description.

A very rare and important work for the study of the dissemination of the history of Portugal in the cultured world of the time. It was published on the occasion of the Restoration of the Portuguese Monarchy in 1640. The author had written in 1629 Hispania Sive de Regis Hispaniae Regnis, with a general description of the whole of Spain, where he included many references to Portugal due to the fact of our country beeing under spanish domination at the time, having the same king as the other territories of the peninsula.

As the revolution of 1640 December 1st had returned Portugal to the rule of a Portuguese King, Laet hastened to publish a work exclusively devoted to the description of Portugal, fully aware of the change in the play of forces that the Restoration of the Portuguese Monarchy and the consequent separation of Portugal from the other kingdoms of the peninsula, caused, in Europe and in the colonial possessions of European countries.

The work is divided into fourteen chapters dealing with the following subjects: General geographical and hydrographical description, detailed description with the enumeration of the counties, description of the climate and agriculture, characteristics of their inhabitants, description of the laws and regulations since the Cortes of Lamego. About the cities and provinces that Portugal possessed in Africa and in the Atlantic, about the cities and fortresses that Portugal possessed in Asia in special in India, in Brazil. List of the kings of Portugal, the succession of the kings of Castile in the kingdom of Portugal, the noble families of the country, the demography and the annual income of the Portuguese kingdom. The ecclesiastical division of the kingdom and the religious orders, the universities and the most famous writers. It also contains an appendix with the translation of the Manifesto of King João IV, and descriptions of Portuguese possessions in Africa and Asia such as Cananor and Malacca.

The author drew on several Portuguese and foreign writers such as André de Resende, Damião de Góis, Duarte Nunes de Leão, Nicolau de Oliveira, Pedro de Mariz, Father António de Vasconcelos, Jerónimo Conestágio and Caramuel Lubkovitz.

Together and by the same author: DE IMPERIO MAGNI MOGOLIS SIVE INDIA VERA COMMENTARIUS. E varijs auctoribus congestus. Cum Privilegio. Lvgdvni Batavorum, Ex Officina Elzeviriana. Anno CIC ICC XXXI. [1631].

[xii], 299, [xvii], [iv] pp. Illustrated with beautiful engraved frontispiece designed by C. Cl. Duysend.

The preliminary leaves contain the dedication to Daniel Heinsio, Adviser and Historian to King Gustav Adolfus and professor, librarian and secretary of the University of Lvgdvni Batavorum; preface to the reader and chapter index. The final leaves contain the thematic index and the last four pages are blank.

A very rare work which describes in detail the Empire of the Grand Mogul, based on the works of the Portuguese Pedro Teixeira, of the geographer Samuel Purchasio, the English Thomas Roeus and belgian Peter van den Broecke. Besides this main subject Laet also deals with the history of India in general and its various kingdoms.
