Profusamente ilustrado em extratexto, sobre papel muito encorpado, com uma reprodução a cores do retrato de 'Emily, Countess of Glengall' antes da folha de rosto e reproduções monocromáticas (sépia e cinzento) de pinturas de Lawrence, protegidas por folhas de papel vegetal. Cada reprodução apresenta a legenda da respectiva pintura. O texto é ilustrado com pequenas reproduções de pormenores das pinturas do artista.

Texto em belos e nítidos caracteres, com iniciais decoradas, impresso sobre papel de linho muito alvo e sonante. Apresenta nas margens a marca de água do impressor Goupil, a palavra Rives e as iniciais B F H também em marca de água.

Exemplar 27 de uma tiragem de 600 com dedicatória a Lady Warwick, datada de Maio de 1900 na folha de guarda e com cartão colocado em frente da página, com data de 24 de Dezembro de 1950 com dedicatória de oferta.

Thomas Lawrence (Bristol, 1769 - Londres, 1830) foi um pintor inglês, considerado um dos mais notáveis retratistas da Europa da primeira metade do século XIX. Estabelecido em Londres desde 1787, passou a pintar os retratos da família Real Inglesa, desde 1790; foi admitido na Academia Real Inglesa em 1794 da qual foi Presidente a partir de1820. Pintou retratos de líderes europeus que derrotaram Napoleão, para a Sala Waterloo do Castelo de Windsor, numerosos retratos de eclesiáticos, como o Papa Pio Pio VII, de escritores, como Sir Walter Scott, membros da aristocracia e da burguesia inglesa e europeia, sendo uma das mais belas obras deste pintor o retrato da Rainha D. Maria II de Portugal, com 9 anos de idade, pintado em 1829, aquando da estadia da futura soberana em Londres.

 33 × 27 cm. [iv], iv, 181 pp. Full leather binding with raised bands, gilt tooled metal fittings on the spine and covers, forming a square frame with six fillets, and highly elaborate and beautiful embossing on the leather and on the cream-coloured silk fabric covering the endpapers.

Richly illustrated with plates, printed on very thick paper, featuring a colour reproduction of the portrait of ‘Emily, Countess of Glengall’ preceding the title page, and monochrome reproductions (in sepia and grey) of Lawrence’s paintings, protected by sheets of tracing paper. Each reproduction is accompanied by a caption for the respective painting. The text is illustrated with small reproductions of details from the artist’s paintings.

The text is set in beautiful, crisp typefaces with decorated initials, printed on very white, crisp linen paper. The margins feature the Goupil printer’s watermark, the word ‘Rives’ and the initials ‘B F H’, also in watermark.

Copy number 27 of a print run of 600, with a dedication to Lady Warwick dated May 1900 on the flyleaf, and a card attached to the front of the page, dated 24 December 1950, containing a gift dedication.

A magnificent and rare edition of exceptional quality and beauty, bound in a custom-made binding by Zaehnsdorf, with the name gilt engraved in gold in the front pastedown and the binder’s device gilt engraved on the back pastedown.

Thomas Lawrence (Bristol, 1769 – London, 1830) was an English painter, regarded as one of the most notable portraitists in Europe during the first half of the 19th century. Based in London since 1787. He began painting portraits of the British Royal Family in 1790; He was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1794, of which he became President in 1820. He painted portraits of European leaders who defeated Napoleon for the Waterloo Room at Windsor Castle, numerous portraits of clergymen, such as Pope Pius VII, of writers such as Sir Walter Scott, and of members of the English and European aristocracy and bourgeoisie. One of this painter’s finest works is the portrait of Queen Maria II of Portugal, aged 9, painted in 1829 during the future sovereign’s stay in London.
