GANDON. (Édouard Honoré) OIL ON CANVAS - FLOWERS - CIRCA 1950-60.

Assinado: E. H. Gandon.

Dimensões:  Tela: 43x35,5 cm; Moldura: 67x59,5 cm; Peso: 4,470 Kg.

 Signed: E. H. Gandon.

Dimensions:  Canvas: 43x35.5 cm; Frame: 67x59.5 cm; Weight: 4.470 kilos.

On the back of the frame there is an authorship affidavit signed by his daughter: «EHGANDON autenticado por sua filha H[ugette] Gandon».

Framed in a very old wooden frame (probably from late 19th century, bigger and adapted to the canvas) with a handmade plaster decoration, with some broken curls, although beautiful and recoverable from these slight damages.

This oil on canvas is a china jar with flowers; a kind of porcelain jar with the shape of a peanut containing at least 10 chrysanthemums in bright colours. This is a beautiful and unique, although modern, painting inspired in the French school of Paul Gaugin or Pierre Auguste Renoir. According to some reviews he was an outstanding painter before he came to Portugal. Here he paints very interesting oils such as «Varinas e paisagem»; «Vistas de ruas e paisagens»; «Vista de Sintra»; etc.

Édouard Honoré Gandon (1886-1962) was a French painter, mainly active in Portugal. He was deployed in World War One and came to Portugal in 1940 when his daughter married an industrialist and patron of the arts. In Lisbon he lived with his well-established family, who was amongst the wealthiest families of the city. There was little commitment to make his art known, and he knew he was not a vanguard artist. There was an abundance of paintings in the family homes. His oil paintings were just beautiful objects, which looked great on the walls of their wealthy houses. Most of the works attributed to him are nowadays appearing in auctions without any signature, and they might be fake items done by clever opportunists.
