Facsimile of the original document written in Castilian, kept in the Torre do Tombo National Archive in Lisbon. The Treaty of Tordesillas was a bilateral agreement signed in the town of Tordesillas on 7 June 1494 between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Crown of Castile. It was ratified by Castile on 2 July and by Portugal on 5 September 1494. The document in Castilian was given to the King of Portugal and is currently in the Torre do Tombo National Archive in Lisbon; the document written in Portuguese is in the General Archive of the Indies in Seville.

This was the culmination of a long process of negotiations between the two kingdoms to divide up the discovered and undiscovered lands around the world. The demarcation line was defined as the meridian that passed 370 leagues to the west of the island of Santo Antão, in the Cape Verde Archipelago.
