Excelente coreografia militar que ultrapassa a padronização real dos objectos, segundo o autor 'resultado de longos anos de porfiadas investigações em bibliotecas e arquivos quer nacionais quer estrangeiros, tendo em mira o estudo da evolução do traje militar em Portugal'. O autor teve o cuidado de dispor dentro das respectivas épocas, deste acervo histórico e descritivo, 'o traje ou uniforme usado, e bem assim o respectivo armamento ou equipamento que o marinheiro militar envergou, desde o pesado arcabuz ao fuzil da ordenança'.

Alberto Cutileiro foi o primeiro pintor naval do Museu de Marinha e desenhou gravuras e mapas navais, ao estilo de épocas passadas, para serem utilizados como ilustrações de exposições e livros sobre os Descobrimentos.

Endpapers in all volumes with gold embossing in the centre, depicting the Sagres Training Ship (NRP). They include a silk ribbon marker.

Richly illustrated with supplementary engravings depicting uniforms, weapons and other accessories, all of which are artistically drawn and coloured, it includes a detailed illustration, in the style of an ex-libris, of the Portuguese Navy’s insignia – featuring a black anchor with a central shield, the national flag and a crossed musket – is included on the flyleaf of each volume.

Printed on coated paper. Includes a biographical note on the author by Rear Admiral Sarmento Rodrigues and an introduction dated Sintra, July 1980.

An excellent account of military history that goes beyond the mere standardisation of objects; according to the author, it is “the result of many years of painstaking research in libraries and archives, both national and foreign, with a view to studying the evolution of military dress in Portugal”. The author has taken care to organise this historical and descriptive collection within their respective periods, detailing “the uniform worn, as well as the respective weaponry or equipment carried by the naval officer, ranging from the heavy arquebus to the service rifle”.

Alberto Cutileiro was the first naval painter at the Naval Museum and produced engravings and nautical charts, in the style of bygone eras, to be used as illustrations for exhibitions and books on the Age of Discovery.
