Esta obra é fruto da vivência de Tomas Shaw como capelão de várias feitorias inglesas no norte de África, nomeadamente no Levante, na Regência de Argel (centro de poder do Império Otomano no Magrebe), na Regência de Tunes, na Síria, Egipto e Arábia Pétrea. Traça um perfil destes reinos, feito de cuidadosas observações politicas, sociológicas, mas sobretudo geográficas. Com meios rudimentares, Shaw efectua levantamentos geodésicos, dos quais retira informação para as cartas anexas à sua obra, as quais apresentam algumas distorções evidentes.

Durante o século XVIII e XIX serviu como obra de referência sobre a Argélia e a Tunísia.

Testemunhos directos de europeus sobre a Regência de Argel são muitíssimo raros e é aí que se situa o principal interesse desta obra.

De facto, antes da conquista da Argélia pela França em 1830 e antes da missão de espionagem levada a cabo por Yves Boutin em 1808, a França não tinha informações da Argélia mais recentes que as de Shaw.

This work is the result of Tomas Shaw's experience as chaplain of several English factories in North Africa, namely in the Levant, in the Regency of Algiers (Ottoman Empire power centre in the Maghreb), in the Regency of Tunis, in Syria, Egypt and Arabia Petraea. It presents a description of these kingdoms resulting from careful observations of political, sociological but especially of geographic nature. With rudimentary means, Shaw performs geodetic surveys, from which he retrieves information for the maps annexed to his work, which have some obvious distortions.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth century it served as a reference book on Algeria and Tunisia.

Direct testimonies from European on the Regency of Algiers are extremely rare and therein lies the main interest of this work. In fact, before the conquest of Algeria in 1830 and before the spy mission carried out by Yves Boutin in 1808, France had no information on Algeria more updated than that from Shaw.
