The War of the Duchies or Second Schleswig War was a military conflict that pitted the Austrian Empire and Prussia against Denmark in 1864. Denmark was defeated and had to cede Schleswig-Holstein, which was annexed by the other two powers. The war ended on 30 October 1864, when the Treaty of Vienna formalised Denmark's cession of the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Saxony-Lauenburg to Prussia and Austria.

The precedents for the War of the Duchies date back to 1863, when the German Confederation protested against the attempt by the Danish monarch, Christian IX, to incorporate the Duchy of Schleswig, which was under official German control, into Denmark. The London Protocol of 1852 provided for the integration of the Duchy of Schleswig into the Duchy of Holstein, which was a member of the German Confederation. Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck persuaded Francis Joseph I of the House of Austria to jointly defend the London Protocol. On 16 January 1864, the agreement between the two was signed. Bismarck issued an ultimatum to Denmark demanding the abolition of the November Constitution within 48 hours, which the Danish government rejected.

Austrian and Prussian forces invaded the Jutland peninsula and the War of the Duchies began. In August 1864, Denmark was defeated by Moltke's army and forced to hand over the disputed territories to Austria and Prussia.

Chancellor Bismarck deliberately obstructed the Austrian administration of Holstein and sent troops into the duchy when Austria protested to the Frankfurt Parliament. This triggered the Seven Weeks' War between the two Germanic powers.

Currently, the disputed territory in the War of the Duchies is the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.
