These two works are the most important of this author, who exerted a great influence on the development of law in Europe of the Ancien Regime. Like all his works they are distinguished by the clarity and rigour of their exposition and by the good literary taste with which they are written, the author resorting to numerous quotations from Greco-Roman poets and writers.

The first work, on the legislation relating to marriage, provoked a controversy with Amaury Bouchard and the second work is very important for the study of rights of succession and the status of the nobility.

André Tiraqueau (Fontenay-le-Comte, Poitou, 1488 - Paris, 1558). French humanist, jurist and politician, was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Renaissance in France. His complete works were published in 5 volumes in 1574, 1584 and then in 7 volumes in Frankfurt in 1597 and 1615. They treat subjects from Roman and Canon law, as well as the customary law of France and the jurisprudence of the courts, with methods proper to humanism, without, however, breaking completely with the medieval techniques of jurisprudence.

Le Cercle André Tiraqueau was created in 1995, an association sponsored by the Institute of the History of Law of the University of Poitiers, which in collaboration with other organisations regularly carries out scientific activities in the field of the history of law and political sciences.
