 3 volumes. 29x18 cm. [15], 534 + [8] 642] + [16], 671pp.

Nineteenth century full leather binding, with gilt tools on spine. Frontispiece printed in two colours by the Oficina Real Deslandesiana.

Copy with ex-libris from F. Figueiredo Chaves on the verso of the three title pages.

Illustrated with 2 maps on the 3rd volume : “Reyno do Algarve” (hors-texte, pages 4/5) and “Provincia da Estremadura” (hors-texte, pages 16/17). These two maps do not belong to the edition.

Copy with marginal notes and coeval underlining in the first two volumes. Some folios with acidity due to the quality of the paper used in the edition.

The folio 191/192 of the first volume is torn due to iron gall ink corrosion. Restoration on page 144 of the third volume. In volume III the Map of Algarve (“Mapa do Algarve”) and the first folio of the licences show signs of old restoration, pages 275/276 also restored. Volume I shows in the preliminary pages some slight damp stains. All the volumes present ex-libris in the back of the frontispieces and, scattered, slight damp stains not affecting the text.

Work of reference, considered as one of the most important in what concerns the study of geography; local administration and history; local genealogies; place names and their linguistic origin; and information about the old people and institutions responsible for the villages and cities of Portugal.

The maps in the third volume do not belong to the edition. The work was not published with maps. The author, in the prologue to the first volume, states that he would like to publish a second edition with maps, but he was never able to fulfil this wish. The second edition, published in 1868-69, also has no maps.

In very rare cases, certain collectors have interspersed in these volumes maps by Charles de Grandpré, engraved around 1730, originally intended for a work by D. Luís Caetano de Lima. «Geografia Histórica... Lisboa. 1734-1736». These maps, when inserted in books for which they were not made, are damaged, as they have to be trimmed a lot, leaving them without margins and sometimes reaching the cartouche of the engraving.

Innocent states that: "Friar Manuel de Figueiredo, in his otherwise brief and very small Descripção de Portugal on pag. XVII, speaking of the Corographia and Fr Carvalho, says that the latter undertaking in the composition of this work an action deserving of much praise, would made more estimable his project, if he had the talents and means to carry it out without begging and believing much of what he had printed. This judgement of the Cistercian chronicler has been confirmed by other critics, and no one today doubts that Fr Carvalho's Corographia has very serious defects. His main faults and errors are in the genealogical section, where he seems to have had very little knowledge, and where he received the information from interested parties without judgement, abusing their sincerity, or perhaps the condescension he was obliged to show because he had no resources of his own. The catalogues of the bishops of the cathedrals of the kingdom are also inaccurate; and as regards the origin and foundations of cities and towns, he adopts, without criticism or examination, the opinions of Friar Bernardo de Brito, and of other writers of the same kind, who were in vogue at the time, and whose dreams were still undoubtedly true. Such defects, however, do not prevent this work from being esteemed and sought after both within and outside the kingdom, and copies are becoming increasingly scarce on the market, so that after a few years they will have to become truly rare".
