Esta Obligation Bond (obrigação), escrita no reinado da Rainha Elizabeth I de Inglaterra, tinha como objetivo estabelecer uma multa se determinadas condições não fossem satisfeitas por Thomas ap Richard. O documento é bilingue, escrito dos dois lados da folha, sendo um em latim e o outro em inglês.

Parte 1: O Lado em Latim (A Obrigação Financeira)"Saibam todos os homens por estes presentes que eu, Thomas ap Richard, estou firmemente obrigado e devidamente devedor a [Nome do Credor] na quantia de [Valor da Multa, ex: 40 Libras] de boa e legal moeda da Inglaterra, a ser paga ao dito [Nome do Credor] ou ao seu certo procurador, herdeiros ou executores. Para o fiel pagamento do qual, eu obrigo a mim mesmo, meus herdeiros, executores e administradores, firmemente por estes presentes, selado com o meu selo. Parte 2: O Lado em Inglês (A Condição de Cancelamento)"A condição desta obrigação é tal que, se o acima obrigado Thomas ap Richard, seus herdeiros, executores ou administradores cumprirem, pagarem ou fizerem cumprir [a condição específica, ex: o pagamento de uma dívida menor até uma data fixa, ou a entrega de uma propriedade], então esta presente obrigação será nula e sem efeito; caso contrário, permanecerá em pleno vigor, poder e virtude jurídica."

No século XVI, uma obrigação (obligation ou bond) era o instrumento jurídico e financeiro mais comum para garantir o cumprimento de contratos, casamentos, funções públicas e, acima de tudo, o pagamento de dívidas comerciais. Este mecanismo foi desenhado estrategicamente para contornar as restrições legais à cobrança de juros e funcionava como um título executivo absoluto, o que assegurava uma execução judicial ultra-rápida sem a necessidade de provar danos em tribunal. O impacto deste modelo financeiro foi tão profundo que moldou a mentalidade da época e a própria literatura, servindo de inspiração para grandes obras de.

Na peça O Mercador de Veneza (1596) de William Shakespeare, a célebre exigência de Shylock por uma libra de carne de António replica exatamente a estrutura deste título penal inglês. No enredo, a sanção física extrema funciona como a penalização contratual pelo incumprimento da dívida, substituindo o tradicional pagamento duplicado previsto na época.

This copy has slight stains that affect the text, making it difficult to read, particularly the first line of the Latin section. The signatures in the Latin section are very faded, and the seals have been cut away — indications that the conditions set out in this interesting document were probably fulfilled.

This Obligation Bond (bond), drawn up during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, was intended to impose a fine should certain conditions not be met by Thomas ap Richard. The document is bilingual, written on both sides of the sheet, with one side in Latin and the other in English.

In the plot, this extreme physical punishment serves as a contractual penalty for failure to repay the debt, replacing the traditional double payment required at the time.
