Os primeiros Volumes são de dimensões reduzidas em comparação ao resto da coleção: De 23x16,5 cm. 

Obra monumental e fundamental para o estudo da marinha de guerra portuguesa desde a época da Restauração da Independência em 1640 e até ao início do século XX, com descrições dos navios, os locais da sua construção ou aquisição, comandantes e as tripulações, as operações navais e batalhas em que se envolveram, e as condições do seu desmantelamento ou naufrágio.

António Marques Esparteiro (Abrantes, Mouriscas; 1898 - 1976) foi um notável militar português, director da Escola de Alunos Marinheiros, além de comandar as Forças Navais do Estado da Índia. Foi autor de diversos estudos e manuais técnico-navais, destacando-se igualmente na investigação histórica, sobretudo com a publicação do Dicionário Ilustrado de Marinha. 

 Commander Esparteiro's monumental and fundamental work THREE CENTURIES IN THE OCEAN: 1640-1910 is a 32 volume collection of studies on the Portuguese war navy since the time of the Restoration of Independence in 1640 until the early 20th century. It describes the ships, the places of their construction or acquisition, the captains and crews, the navy operations and battles in which they involved, and the conditions for its dismantling, or shipwreck.

Paperbacks. Illustrated hors-text with the drawings, reproductions, engravings, paintings and photographs with images of naval units; their commanders; and its patrons.

The collection comprises two first volumes: «Printed Books in the 15th and 16th centuries»; and the «First List of the Navy», plus 11 parts, or published series, containing the following: galleons, small galleons, frigates, corvettes, brigs, transport ships, schooners; steam boats and tugs; gunboats, cruisers, and several other ships.

António Marques Esparteiro (Abrantes, Mouriscas; 1898 - 1976) was a portuguese military, principal in Escola de Alunos Marinheiros and commander of the Naval Forces in the Portuguese Province of India. He was known as the author for many studies and naval technical manuals, while also being acknowledged for his works as an historical investigator, mostly with the publishing of his Dicionário Ilustrado de Marinha.
