Ilustrado com 12 belas gravuras de página inteira, nas páginas 2, 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 72, 82, 92, 100 e 110. Cada gravura tem uma legenda explicativa em latim com frases da Bíblia e de outras fontes. As gravuras representam a Virgem Maria, símbolo da Igreja como mestra que ensina; o exame particular das acções de cada pessoa; os pecados capitais; a imprevisibilidade da morte; o Inferno; a contemplação da paixão e Crucificação de Cristo; e o desejo de salvação.

Exemplar com ex libris de A. de M. Guimarães Ferreira colado no interior da encadernação que se apresenta desgastada, com falta do rótulo, com os ferros a ouro desvanecidos pelo uso e com pequenas faltas de pele nas margens das pastas e à cabeça e no pé da lombada e parcialmente descolada dos cadernos. Apresenta assinatura de posse rasurada na folha de rosto, algumas manchas nas primeiras páginas, pequenos furos de traça junto ao festo e nas folhas de guarda, bem como um pequeno pico de traça quase imperceptível que atravessa todo o livro.

A folha de rosto apresenta um elaborado florão em que dois anjos seguram um escudo com o trigrama sagrado com setas por baixo e sobrepujado por uma cruz, símbolo muito comum nos livros da Companhia de Jesus. Todas as páginas, com excepção das páginas com as gravuras, e incluindo a de rosto são enquadradas por uma esquadria com motivos vegetalistas.

Bela obra de emblemática da Companhia de Jesus que se destinava a divulgar os Exercícios Espirituais de Santo Inácio de Loyola pela combinação da imagem com legendas e do texto em prosa, facilitando assim a respectiva prática por um número muito alargado de religiosos e leigos.

Os Exercícios Espirituais de Santo Inácio são um caminho de identificação com Jesus e com o seu estilo de vida propostos pelo fundador da Companhia de Jesus para serem praticados durante um retiro de um mês com quatro etapas, mas podiam ser realizados de várias outras maneiras, por uma só pessoa acompanhada por um director espiritual e em períodos mais curtos.

É de grande importância para estudar o uso dos emblemas pelos jesuítas na sua missão de ensino, evangelização, missionação e combate ao protestantismo através do poder da imagem combinada com a leitura e meditação de textos religiosos e com a oração.

Por outro lado é essencial para o estudo do desenvolvimento das técnicas da gravura, da impressão e da divulgação das ideias nas sociedades no período posterior à Reforma Católica.

Obra constituída por uma Advertência sobre os exercícios, por Advertências sobre a oração mental ou meditação, por oito exercícios, uma Advertência final e uma oração a Cristo Nosso Senhor, em latim. No fim apresenta as licenças.

Esta obra foi traduzida para português pelo Padre Manuel Coimbra, sendo publicada em Lisboa, em 1687, foi reeditada no México em 1756 e em 1846 e traduzida para latim em 1778.

Sebastián Izquierdo (Alcaraz, Albacete 1601 - Roma 1681), matemático e filósofo espanhol, entrou para a Companhia de Jesus em 1623. Ensinou teologia e filosofia nos colégios da Companhia de Jesus de Alcalá de Henares, Múrcia e Madrid, entre 1641 e 1661. Foi nomeado censor da Inquisição em Madrid. De seguida foi viver para Roma como assistente da Ordem e em 1661 foi escolhido para assistente do Geral como representante das províncias da Companhia em Espanha. Apesar de ser especialmente notável como matemático e filósofo, segundo Adán Oliver: «um dos poucos espanhóis que contribuíram para o início da ciência moderna», Izquierdo, com a vasta e profunda cultura característica dos Jesuítas, escreveu igualmente obras notáveis sobre teologia, oração e espiritualidade.

Illustrated with 12 beautiful full-page prints on pages 2, 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 72, 82, 92, 100 and 110. Each print has a Latin explanatory caption with passages from the Bible and other sources. The pictures represent the Virgin Mary, symbol of the Church as a teacher; the specific examination of each person's actions; capital sins; the unpredictability of death; Hell; the contemplation of the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ; and the desire for salvation.

Copy with ex-libris of A. de M. Guimarães Ferreira glued on the inside of the front board, which is worn out; missing the label, with gilt tools faded by handling; and with small gaps in the leather at the edges of the boards and at the head and tail of spine and partially detached from the signatures. It has a scratched signature on the title page, some stains on the first pages, small bookworm holes next to the hinge and on the endpapers, as well as a small almost imperceptible bookworm hole that runs through the whole book.

The title page shows an elaborate fleuron in which two angels hold a shield with the sacred trigram with arrows underneath and superimposed by a cross, a symbol very common in the books of the Society of Jesus. All the pages, except the pages with the engravings, and including the title page, are framed by a square-shaped pattern with plant motifs.

A beautiful work of emblematic of the Society of Jesus, which was intended to spread the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola by combining the image with subtitles and the text in prose, thus facilitating their practice by a very large number of religious and secular people.

The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius are a journey of identification with Jesus and with his life style proposed by the founder of the Society of Jesus to be practised during a month-long retreat with four stages, but they could be carried out in various other ways, by one person accompanied by a spiritual director and in shorter periods.

It is of great importance to study the use of symbols by the Jesuits in their work of teaching, evangelization, mission, and combating Protestantism through the power of image combined with reading and meditation of religious texts, and with prayer.

It is also essential for the study of the development of engraving techniques, printing and the dissemination of ideas in societies in the period following the Catholic Reform.

This work consists of a Warning on exercises, a Warning on mental prayer or meditation, eight exercises, a final Warning and a prayer to Christ our Lord in Latin. At the end it presents the Licences.

It was translated into Portuguese by Father Manuel Coimbra, and published in Lisbon in 1687. It was re-edited in Mexico in 1756 and 1846 and translated into Latin in 1778.

Sebastian Izquierdo (Alcaraz, Albacete, 1601 - Rome, 1681), Spanish mathematician and philosopher, joined the Society of Jesus in 1623. He taught theology and philosophy in the colleges of the Society of Jesus in Alcalá de Henares, Murcia and Madrid from 1641 to 1661. He was appointed censor of the Inquisition in Madrid. He then moved to Rome as assistant to the Order and in 1661 was chosen as assistant to the Superior General as representative of the provinces of the Society in Spain. Although he was especially remarkable as a mathematician and philosopher, according to Adán Oliver: "one of the few Spaniards who contributed to the beginning of modern science", Izquierdo, with the vast and deep culture characteristic of the Jesuits, also wrote remarkable works on theology, prayer and spirituality.
