Pedânio Dioscórides foi um médico grego que servia no exército romano, considerado o fundador da farmacognosia através da sua obra De Materia Medica, a principal fonte de informação sobre drogas medicinais desde o século I até ao século XVIII. A De Materia Medica encontra-se dividida em cinco livros. Nela se descrevem cerca de 600 plantas, 35 fármacos de origem animal e 90 de origem mineral, dos quais só cerca de 130 já apareciam no Corpus hippocraticum e 100 ainda são considerados como tendo actividade farmacológica. A sua influência foi enorme até ao século XVIII, existindo inúmeras traduções do grego para um grande número de línguas. O interesse por esta obra tem sido sempre renovado com obras que identificam as espécies utilizadas.

Pedânio Dioscorides was a Greek physician serving in the Roman army, considered the founder of pharmacognosy through his work De Materia Medica, the main source of information on medicinal drugs from the 1st Century until the 18th Century.

De Materia Medica is divided into five books. It describes approximately 600 plants, animal drugs 35 and 90 of mineral origin, of which only about 130 already appear in the corpus hippocraticum and 100 are still considered as having pharmacological activity. His influence was huge until the 18th Century, and there are numerous translations from Greek into a number of languages. The interest in this book has always been renovated with works that identify the species used.
