2ª edição raríssima do único tratado de leis e costumes hebraicos, escrito em língua portuguesa e impresso para uso dos judeus sefarditas portugueses.

Frontispício gravado. Contém rosto próprio para a Parte Terceira ('Das festas e jejuns, de todo o anno, que o povo de Israel he obrigado a guardar'); e para a última parte ('Na qual se comtem todos os preceitos, ritos e cerimonias que tocão a huma perfeyta ECONOMICA Dedicada aos muy nobres e magnificos Senhores Abraham e Ishak Israel Pereyra').

Menasseh ben Israel nasceu em Lisboa em 1604 e muito jovem foi para Amesterdão com seu pai, Joseph ben Israel. Em 1622 foi nomeado professor da comunidade judaica portuguesa e quatro anos depois fundou a primeira tipografia hebraica em Amesterdão; imprimindo pequenos (mas valiosos) livros em Português, Espanhol e Hebraico. Também teve uma contribuição decisiva na reabertura da Inglaterra aos judeus, impedidos de aí entrar desde a época do Rei Eduardo I. Viajou pessoalmente a Londres e manteve conversações com Cromwell que lhe deu uma pensão honorífica da qual nunca usufruiu, pois morreu no regresso em 1658. Menasseh foi retrato por Rembrandt.

Treasure of Jewish Laws that the people of Israel must know and observe composed by Rabbi Hacham Menasseh ben Israel in Amsterdam, the 1st edition was published in 1647 and this 2nd edition in 1710.

Contains title page to Third Part (Of feasts and fasts throughout the year, the people of Israel must know and observe) and the Last part (in which contains all the provisions, rites and ceremonies concerning a perfect economy dedicated to the very noble and magnificent lords Abraham and Ishak Israel Pereyra).

MENASSEH BEN ISRAEL was born in Lisbon in 1604. At a very young age he went to Amsterdam with his father, Joseph ben Israel, and became a disciple of Haham Yshac Uziel. In 1622 he was appointed professor of the Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam and, four years later, he founded the first Hebraic typography in Amsterdam; printing small books in Portuguese, Spanish, and Hebrew. Menasseh had a decisive contribution in reopening England to the Jewish people, closed since the time of King Edward I. He personally went to London and had talks with Cromwell who gave him a honorific pension he never took profit of. Menasseh died in 1658 after having returned from London. He had his portrait painted by his friend Rembrandt.
