MANUSCRITO. REGULA FRATRUM REGULArium Ordinis dominini nostri Iesu Christi, ex magna Regula gloriosi patris Benedicti desumpta.

In 4.º 24x17 cm.

Rule of the Regular Friars of the Order of our Lord Jesus Christ, abridged from the Great Rule of the glorious father Saint Benedict.

In 4º (24x17 cm) with [ii], 48 [vi] folios.

Binding: contemporary goat skin over wooden boards, worn out and bumped at corners. Gilt with a decorative super-libris on in both folders. Furniture with metal clasps. Capital letters written in red. Last 6 unnumbered folios have a add on “tabella temporia litterarii Martyrologii” and a ceremonial with Portuguese and Latin chants and prayers.

Portuguese manuscript written in Latin, on parchment, of the late 16th century, after the "demilitarization" of the Military Order of Christ, in 1529, "when the community went into a reform imposed by the Crown, who commissioned (1529) the Jeronimites Friars and the Provincial Father Antonio de Lisboa, to enforce the observance of the Rule of Calatravra. The Prior and friars who opposed the project were placed in churches of the Order, being replaced by 12 novices (1532), which have been forced to live like cloistered monks” [in Vasconcelos e Sousa, Ordens Religiosas em Portugal das origens a Trento, pag. 499].

In accordance we find at the epistolary introduction of this document: “all Latin words would translated in vulgar language, according to Brother Alphonsus and Provincial of the Order of Jerónimos, and confirmed by decree of Pope Gregory XIII. [Pope from 1572 until his death].

ORDER OF CHRIST: Founded by Bula Ad ea ex Quibus of Pope John XXIII (14-3-1319) as a result of long negotiations over the assets of the Order of the Temple (Templars) in Portugal. In 1312, when the Order of the Temple was abolished its goods were intended to be handed over to the Order of the Hospital. The Portuguese monarch insisted (1313-1318) in the bond of the Templars to the service of the king and protection of the kingdom. Perhaps influenced by the solution found in the kingdom of Aragon - with the creation of the Order of Montesa - he opted to plead (1318) the creation of a new militia of Christ, based in Castro Marim near the maritime border with the lands of the Moors. The castle in Tomar (1160-1171) was built with use of new technical solutions brought from Palestine, and became residence of the first masters of the Order. A polygonal church was built - the Charola (or rotunda) – a copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in Jerusalem. The Church had his own seal (1181) and was referred to as the monastery of the Order (1209). It hosted a community - even though we do not know their actual size - maybe not far from 30 friars, as later in the convent of the Order of Christ.[in Vasconcelos e Sousa, Ordens Religiosas em Portugal das origens a Trento, pag. 465-499].
