Livro muito popular, uma das obras-primas em prosa da literatura portuguesa e, ao mesmo tempo, uma importante fonte histórica sobre a guerra e o cerco à cidade de Diu, atestada pelas inúmeras edições e pelas traduções para inglês e latim que teve.

Obra dividida em quatro livros acompanhados de um índice analítico. Enriquecida com muitas cartas de diversos personagens históricos, como D. João de Castro, D. João III, Infante D. Luís ou S. Francisco Xavier. Inclui pormenorizada descrição da magnífica Capela dos Castros, erigida no Convento de S. Domingos de Benfica, onde repousam os restos mortais de D. João de Castro e dos seus descendentes.

O Segundo Cerco à fortaleza portuguesa de Diu pelas forças do sultanato do Guzerate, capitaneadas por Coge Sofar, mercador e senhor de Surrate, teve lugar entre Abril e Novembro de 1546. Este acontecimento de incontestável importância para o “Estado da Índia”, definiu a governação do Vice-Rei D. João de Castro (1545-1548) e representou a derradeira tentativa Guzerate para retomar a fortaleza de Diu, anteriormente entregue aos portugueses em 1535. Coge Sofar, cujo retrato figura nesta obra, era senhor de Cambaia e aliado aos turcos de Sulimão Paxá. Foi derrotado pelos portugueses no segundo cerco de Diu, comandados em terra por D. João de Mascarenhas e por mar por D. João de Castro. Pereceu nesta luta o próprio Coge Sofar e D. Fernando de Castro, filho do Vice-Rei português.

Jacinto Freire de Andrade (Beja, 1597 – Lisboa, 1657) foi presbítero secular, historiador, bacharel em Cânones pela Universidade de Coimbra e um poeta barroco.

Illustrated with a full-page engraving on page 59, decorated initials at the beginning of the dedication, the table of contents and each book, beautiful finishing fleurons at the end of books 1, 2 and 4 (pp. 86, 329 and 444).

Copy with leather flaws on the spine and corners of the boards. There are notes in ink, handwritten ownership titles and oleographic stamps on the endpapers and title page and handwritten ownership titles on pages 109, 205, 283, 429 and 475. Small damp stains on some pages. There are amateur restorations on pages 115/116, 165, 238, 275/276 and 335/336, 490; and the title page is mounted.

Paging errors: 339 instead of 329 and 341-342 instead of 331-332.

Very popular work, one of the masterpieces in prose of Portuguese literature and, at the same time, an important historical source on the war and the siege of the city of Diu, attested by the numerous editions and translations into English and Latin that it has had.

The work is divided into four books with an analytical index. Enriched with many letters from various historical figures, such as Lord João de Castro, King João III, Prince Luís and St Francis Xavier. It includes a detailed description of the magnificent Chapel of the Castros, erected in the Convent of S. Domingos de Benfica, where the remains of João de Castro and his descendants rest.

The Second Siege of the Portuguese fortress of Diu by the forces of the Guzerate sultanate, captained by Coge Sofar, merchant and lord of Surrate, took place between April and November 1546. This undeniably important event for the "State of India" defined the rule of Viceroy João de Castro (1545-1548) and represented the final Guzerate attempt to retake the fortress of Diu, previously handed over to the Portuguese in 1535. Coge Sofar, whose portrait appears in this work, was lord of Cambaia and allied with the Turks of Suliman Pasha. He was defeated by the Portuguese in the second siege of Diu, commanded on land by João de Mascarenhas and by sea by João de Castro. Coge Sofar himself and Fernando de Castro, son of the Portuguese Viceroy, died in this battle.

Jacinto Freire de Andrade (Beja, 1597 - Lisbon, 1657) was a secular priest, historian, bachelor of canons at the University of Coimbra and a Baroque poet.
