Ilustrado com frontispício gravado a buril por J. Vischer e medalhões com a efígie de quase todos os biografados também gravados a buril.

Folha de rosto a preto e vermelho, com marca do impressor com a legenda Tuta sub Aegide Pallas. Impressão muito nítida em caracteres redondos de diversos tamanhos e alguns itálicos, no prólogo, nas poesias e nas citações, com iniciais decoradas nas folhas preliminares. O texto da obra está em caracteres redondos de dimensões normais, enquanto as notas dispostas a duas colunas que preenchem a maior parte de cada página estão impressas em caracteres redondos minúsculos.

Exemplar com desgastes na encadernação com pequenas faltas de pele no pé da lombada, nos nervos e nos cantos. Com assinatura de posse coeva na frente da folha de guarda e com rubrica à cabeça da folha de rosto. Algum acastanhamento característico do tipo de papel.

As folhas preliminares contêm dedicatória a Johann van den Berg, prólogo de Staveren, poesia latina em louvor de Staveren por Daniel D. F. van Alphen, a biografia do autor por Vossio, e excertos de diversos autores que escreveram sobre Cornélio Nepote. As folhas finais incluem uma adenda, as erratas, um pormenorizado índice de assuntos e de significados.

Excelente edição das obras deste historiador romano, em que cada dez linhas de texto original colocado ao alto das páginas é comentado e explicado por numerosas notas de van Staveren e de outros eruditos escolhidas por ele a duas colunas, que ocupam o resto de cada página, o que, conjugado com o vasto índice que ocupas 181 páginas finais sem numeração, permite estudos muito aprofundados destas obras.

Assim o título que lhe foi atribuído - Vitae Excelentium Imperatorum, refere-se à parte da vasta obra, De Illustribus viris, que trata dos generais estrangeiros e inclui 23 biografias de generais atenienses e espartanos tais como Milcíades, Temistócles, Aristides, Pausânias, Cimão, Lisandro, Alcibíades, Trasibulo, Conão, Ificrate Cabria, e Timóteo, de Dione de Siracusa, do persa Datame, de dois tebanos: Epaminondas e Pelopida; de Agesilao de Esparta; de Ermene da Cardia; de Focião e de Timoleão. Inclui vários reis da Pérsia e da Macedónia, que se distinguiram como comandantes militares e os dois últimos capítulos são dedicados aos célebres cartagineses, Amílcar Barca e Aníbal Barca. Inclui depois as vidas de Catão e de Pompónio Ático, pertencentes à parte da obra referida acima, que tinha por título - De historicis latinis, os historiadores latinos e por fim apresenta fragmentos de outras obras, nas páginas 709 a 747.

Cornélio Nepos (Ostiglia?, 99 A. C. - Roma, 32 A. C.) Escritor latino foi amigo de Pompónio Ático, Cícero e Catulo. Viveu em Roma sempre longe das lutas políticas e escreveu as seguintes obras: Chronica, in tre libri, que era um resumo cronológico de toda a história conhecida na sua época; Exemplorum libri (cinco) conjunto de feitos e ditos célebres de personagens históricas de Roma; Vida de Catão, o Censor; Vida e Cícero; e De Illustribus viris, em 16 livros.

Desta extensa obra só se conservam partes sendo as mais extensas pertencentes ao De Illustribus viris, a saber: De excellentibus ducibus exterarum gentium, (Vitae Excelentium Imperatorum) as vidas de Catão e de Pompónio Ático, que faziam parte do livro De historicis latinis; e pequenos fragmentos das outras obras.

Very clear printing in round characters of various sizes and some italics in the prologue, poems and quotations, with decorated initials on the preliminary pages. The text of the work is in normal-sized round characters, while the notes arranged in two columns that fill most of each page are printed in tiny round characters.

Copy showing signs of wear on the binding with small leather flaws at the foot of the spine, at the raised bands and at the corners. With a coeval handwritten ownership title on the front flyleaf and an initialling at the head of the title page. Some browning characteristic of the type of paper.

The preliminary pages contain a dedication to Johann van den Berg, a prologue by Staveren, Latin poetry in praise of Staveren by Daniel D. F. van Alphen, a biography of the author by Vossio, and extracts from various authors who wrote about Cornelius Nepos. The final pages include an addendum, errata and a detailed index of subjects and meanings.

It includes various kings of Persia and Macedonia who distinguished themselves as military commanders and the last two chapters are dedicated to the famous Carthaginians, Amilcar Barca and Hannibal Barca. It then includes the lives of Cato and Pomponius Atticus, belonging to the part of the work mentioned above, which was entitled - De historicis latinis, meaning the Latin historians and finally presents fragments of other works on pages 709 to 747.

Cornelius Nepos (Ostiglia?, 99 BC - Rome, 32 BC) was a Latin writer and friend of Pompilius Atticus, Cicero and Catullus. He lived in Rome always far from political struggles and wrote the following works: Chronica, in tre libri, which was a chronological summary of all known history in his time; Exemplorum libri (five) a collection of famous deeds and sayings of historical figures from Rome; Life of Cato the Censor; Life of Cicero; and De Illustribus viris, in 16 books.

Only parts of this extensive work have been preserved, the longest belonging to the De Illustribus viris, namely: De excellentibus ducibus exterarum gentium, (Vitae Excelentium Imperatorum) the lives of Cato and Pomponius Atticus, which were part of the book De historicis latinis; and small fragments of other works.
