Ilustrada em extratexto com total de 39 gravuras. Uma bela gravura alegórica desenhadas por I. B. Scotin junto à folha de rosto, uma gravura com o retrato do autor, gravada por De Larmessin, gravador do Rei, sobre papel muito encorpado e 37 gravuras, sem assinatura, com desenhos técnicos e de instrumentos. Inclui numerosas tabelas no texto.

Impressão muito nítida sobre papel de linho em caracteres redondos de diversos tamanhos e com alguns itálicos nos títulos dos capítulos e nas citações no texto. Ornamentada com marca do impressor na folha de rosto, belos cabeções alegóricos, com a flor-de-lis, (o da dedicatória desenhado por I. B. Scotin), iniciais decoradas e florões de remate constituídos por jarras com flores.

Exemplar com desgaste superficial na encadernação em especial nas charneiras, nos cantos e nas coifas com alguma perda de pele. Com apontamento manuscrito em letra coeva, na frente da folha de guarda posterior e uma pequena mancha à cabeça das páginas 243 a 246.

As páginas iniciais contêm a dedicatória ao rei Luís XV e o prefácio do filho do autor. As páginas finais incluem a aprovação das obras do autor para publicação, o Privilégio Real e as erratas.

Belíssima edição com uma cuidada apresentação tipográfica característica dos livros franceses do século XVIII.

Uma das mais importantes obras sobre instrumentos ciêntíficos do século XVIII. O seu valor é confirmado pelo facto de ter sido traduzida para inglês e alemão, com várias edições nessas línguas.

A primeira edição foi publicada em 1709, a segunda em 1716, a terceira em 1725, todas em Paris. Foi igualmente publicada uma edição não autorizada, na Haia, em 1723.

Esta 4ª edição foi publicada por Jean Baptiste Nicolas Bion, terceiro filho e sucessor do seu pai, que assina a dedicatória ao Rei.

Nicolas Bion (?, 1652 - Paris, 1733) ourives, metalúrgico, escritor, poeta, foi um célebre fabricante de instrumentos (globos, relógios de sol, astrolábios e instrumentos matemáticos, entre outros) sediado em Paris. Terá sido aprendiz na Corporação dos Fundidores, até 1678. As primeiras notícias de um instrumento, um compasso especial, fabricado por Bion datam de 1688. Tinha uma oficina em Paris no Quai de l’Horloge. Em 1694 construiu o globo terrestre de P. Courtin e em 1712 um par de globos, com 25 centímetros e um globo com 32 centímetros de diâmetro. Nicolas Bion foi um pioneiro em França do fabrico de globos terrestres.

Nomeado por Luís XIV Engenheiro do Rei Para Instrumentos Matemáticos, Nicolas Bion distinguiu-se dos seus pares não só pela sua precisão e rigor na construção dos instrumentos, mas também por partilhar em livro os seus conhecimentos, o que não era comum na época.

Illustrated hors-texte with a total of 39 engravings. A beautiful allegorical engraving drawn by I. B. Scotin next to the title page, an engraving with the author's portrait, engraved by De Larmessin, King's engraver, on very full-bodied paper and 37 engravings, unsigned, with technical and instrument drawings. Includes numerous tables in the text.

Very crisp printing on linen paper in round characters of various sizes and with some italics in chapter titles and in quotations in the text. Ornamented with printer’s device on title-page, beautiful allegorical headpieces, with the fleur de lis, (the one in the dedication drawn by I. B. Scotin), decorated initials, and finishing fleurons consisting of vases with flowers.

Copy with superficial signs of wear on the binding particularly at the hinges, corners and caps with some loss of leather. With coeval handwritten note on front of rear flyleaf and a small stain at the head of pages 243 to 246.

The opening pages contain the dedication to King Louis XV and the preface by the author"s son. The final pages include the approval of the author"s works for publication, the Royal Privilege and the errata.

Beautiful edition with a careful typographical presentation characteristic of 18th century French books.

One of the most important works on scientific instruments of the 18th century. Its value is confirmed by the fact that it has been translated into English and German, with several editions in those languages.

The first edition was published in 1709, the second in 1716, the third in 1725, all in Paris. An unauthorised edition was also published at The Hague in 1723.

This 4th edition was published by Jean Baptiste Nicolas Bion, third son and successor of his father, who signs the dedication to the King. Nicolas Bion (?, 1652 - Paris, 1733) goldsmith, metallurgist, writer, poet, was a celebrated instrument maker (globes, sundials, astrolabes and mathematical instruments, among others) based in Paris. He would have been an apprentice at the foundrymen's guild until 1678. The first reports of an instrument, a special compass, made by Bion dates from 1688. He had a workshop in Paris on the Quai de l'Horloge. In 1694 he built P. Courtin's globe and in 1712 a pair of globes with 25 centimetres and a globe 32 centimetres in diameter. Nicolas Bion was a pioneer in France on the manufacture of terrestrial globes.

Appointed by Louis XIV King’s Engineer to Mathematical Instruments, Nicolas Bion distinguished himself from his peers not only by his precision and rigour in the construction of the instruments, but also by sharing his knowledge in book form, which was unusual at the time.
